I'm just wondering, because no one ever seems to talk about them. Anyway, do any of you guys do AMEB music exams?

I did my saxophone exam last week. I think I went pretty well.

Ooh, good luck for the results!

I've finished my exams (except LMusA, but I would have done it already if I weren't so lazy), but my sisters are still moving through the system. My only problem is that there isn't much continuity between examiners: one examiner might give a student a B+; the next, an A+. Trust me, it's happened before. I know people who've sat 2 exams on the same instrument a week apart...

Yeah if you get someone like GR for instance he will prefer contemporary music and the pieces you pick kinda influence the scoring.
I thought AMEB was a nightmare.
Unless you want to become a pro or make money from teaching then I find it a lot more enjoyable not having to prepare for them...

I think I get my results in about a month. I should get either a high B+ mark of an A. I really am glad that I did Leisure this year, as there is a lot less technical work, that just gets monotonous and boring. I did normal exams last year and I had twice as many scales, twice as much Aural work and a heck of a lot of piece excerpts. I found it much better doing Leisure this year, as you can just do less and become better what you do study, rather than doing a huge mount and having to work for ages to get it all right. I do like my music, bu that much work ruins the fun for me.

I think that there is only one other person at my school doing a 7th grade exam this year. I don't think any are doing 5th or 6th grade. Most drop out of doing exams at our school after year nine. I don't really have a purpose for completing 7th grade, I just like continuing to learn new pieces in detail. I will continue playing through the year, but I will now dedicate more time towards maths study.

Apart from less technical work what other differences are there between leisure and normal exams? One of my good friends has finished the leisure course on piano but refuses to do the normal exams lol.

A.mus and L.mus are awesome just because there was no crappy technical work (though that was pretty much the only enjoyable thing about those 2 exams)

I did up to 7th grade on the Classical syllabus on piano, then did 8th for Leisure because my teacher thought I was too lazy.  We started 8th Classical afterwards, but about halfway through it I just couldn't be bothered anymore...

Fun times.  So glad I don't have to practice anymore though.

Leisure is not any easier than Normal exams, there is simply less work to do. I am not totally sure what benefit doing Normal exams has. If you want to become some sort of professional musician and need 7th grade practical, they accept either Normal of Leisure.

One benefit of doing leisure is that if you do a Leisure exam you can normally choose one of the pieces you wish to do, instead of having to choose them all off the set list, like normal exams.

I suppose if two people applied and one did normal exams, that they would get preference, but I cannot see any other benefit.

I will ask my teacher about the main differences.
