Resources For English Language?
« on: February 19, 2009, 04:57:20 pm »

Ok so I'm currently doing 3/4 English Language, and am using the prescribed Heinemann textbook. However, I find that the book is actually pretty bad...it's missing a lot of core stuff that we should know, and some things are illustrated in too little detail. I had a look at my teachers other book that she uses, called 'Living Lingo', and it looked soooo much better than our Heinemann one. But seeing as though another textbook is an extra $60 or so (yeah, I'm a tightarse lol), I was wondering if there are any good websites/resources that are relevant to VCE English language instead?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Macmillan >>>>> Heinemann. It is, however, out of print, but available on a CD which you would have to track down somehow (my school had it on the network, so I copied it onto a USB and brought it home).

Alternatively, your school library may have a copy of this "Living Lingo" book for you to borrow, or the State Library often has VCE textbooks which you would be able to photocopy relevant sections of*

As for websites, newspaper databases are brilliant for finding current examples and quotes if you want them. e.g. type in "jargon" when you study it, and you'll get articles about Kevin Rudd's jargon, etc. Wikipedia was also a useful resource (there are articles on pretty much everything you study).

* it seems new, though, so good luck finding a copy

Ohh ok cool thanks. Although I doubt my school would have the CD on the computer unfortunately, they're a bit tight lol. And yeah I tried the school's library, no luck there either unfortunately. I figured wikipedia could be quite handy, so I might give it a shot. Thanks mate. :)

My class didn't have a textbook on the book list so we had none, but my teacher borrowed a class set of Living Lingo. It's pretty good so far :). Not too sure about any good sites though. Maybe try borrow a text from a library.

AppleThief I will positive karma you for the rest of my life if you uploaded it. I can understand if you only want to give it to a few people, counting me out. But I would really appreciate it if you could :)

Living Lingo came out first week of term, so it's brand new and not many libraries would have it yet. It's actually not that expensive, and it's far superior to the older texts. VATE sells it for about $35 I think. http://www.vate.org.au - you can call them and order it over the phone with a credit card. Worth the cost!

At school, I use three different books:

1.  Heinemann English Language Units 3+4 - Taunt
2.  Mastering Advanced English Language - Thorne
3.  Living Lingo

Although my teacher ordered a class set of Living Lingo and we've only used it once so far.  I predominantly use Heinemann but yes, at times it does lack the depth.

I think you might have to order it from the VATE website... at least, I haven't seen it at any stores so far...
