Does not going to the workshop have a big affect on your chances to do well? Or is everything basically explained through the distance package?

Nah, the workshop pretty much just builds on the stuff you already get

Unless you're 1-2hours from city theres no need to go

i haven't really read much of the material which you get as part of the package, but yeah, as crayola says,  most of the stuff in the lecture is available in the online resources.
