Help me choose a notebook...

So it's time for me to buy a new notebook for, uhhhh... school.

I've got a few notebooks lined up however I do not know a great deal about hardware stuff, which is where you guys come in...

I've narrowed it down to two laptops, the asus n61jq or the msi gt640

Asus: http://www.asusnotebook.com.au/2108_ASUS-N61JQ-N61JQ-JX021X-Notebook-Intel-Core-i7-720QM-with-Win-7-Pro.php

Msi: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=271&prod_no=1901

I've been quoted $1,445 for the asus and $1,499 for the msi...

While we're here, any other recommendations for a notebook up to $1500?

The MSI gt640 has 1gb Vram.

Meaning the card steals from the Ram? bad?

Oh wow laptops are getting cheaper. Damn tech curve.

Nah, the 1GB ram is just for the video card (i'm 95% sure of that)

No. This means that the Video Card itself has 1Gb of RAM

At Dick Smith I got a $1444 quote for a HP Pavilion dv6-3032TX Notebook with
1.6 GHz Core i7-720QM Processor
6GB RAM, 640GB HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with 1GB video

I guess it's similar to your $1445 one, except with more RAM and a slightly worse video card

Just a slight comment on the asus.
I have one in that shiny case (the top sheet) and it is terrible for fingerprints and scratches. Might not matter to you but may be worth considering

Out of curiosity, why do you want to spend up to $1500 if it is just for school? Do you also want it to be able to handle games + heavy multimedia tasks?

... It's not really for school, It's just how I can justify buying it.

I (try to) do a lot of HD video editing and would like something powerful that can handle games as well. It'd also be nice if it would be a reasonably nice laptop for a few years and throughout Uni etc.

Do NOT get a laptop with i7 QM. The battery life will be so shit, it'll end up being useless.

Steer clear of quad-cores for laptops, a dual-core i5 will do the trick. It uses much less power, and tend to perform similarly [if not better] on day-to-day tasks compared to the i7 as most programs are not designed for multi-core functionality. Also, don't expect yourself to be doing much gaming on a laptop, even with those specs, you won't be able to run games on full settings simply because of cooling issues. If you are really into gaming but still want a laptop, buy a netbook and build a desktop.

BUT, nVidia cards are much better than ATI.

The MSI one would be nice for gaming, nVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M but it really depends on what you are going to use it for,
The MSI one looks like a gaming one so imho i would pick the MSI, As it good components..etc
