Referendum on the Republic 1999

Hi !
We have to explain the process of a referendum with reference to the Republic referendum.
I know that the Constitution Alteration (Establishment of Republic) Bill 1999 was introduced along with the preamble bill. I also know that it was passed by both houses (not one house twice) but would like to know more detail about this stage - did the Bill pass both houses consecutively or was it rejected at some stage and then re-submitted?
i have researched on the 2 websites given in the justice and outcomes textbook but couldnt find any information about this area.

Thanks in advance  ;)

Also .. if anyone knows the how many months it took parliament to give it to the people to vote on (it has to be between 2-6 months).
it would be great if someone knew exactly how long it was for this referendum

it's basically a referenda that was proposed by the gvt in 1999 to which asked the Australian people whether they wanted to become a republic, i.e. independent of the queen. However it did not succeed. This is a perfect example to use if in a exam they happened to ask "why do referenda fail?" then you could say for example people are too conservative which could be seen in the rejection of the proposed referenda to have Australia become independent.
