A sobering critique for all you self-styled 'greenies' out there:

But they are also taking a lot of support from people who think that Green is a description of environmental policies. It is much more than that. It is a clever marketing label. Beyond the label is a fully formed agenda of radical positions on tax, economics and foreign affairs. It pays to look carefully before buying the product.

I don't even like the Greens much but this is quite clearly a hit piece. Made a lot of religious, family and pro-capitalism appeals. Many of them lacking substance and evidence.

Why don't you enlighten us on what they are then, Mr Costello?

How I wish people had actually thought about this before handing them the balance of power in both the House of Reps AND the Senate.

The Green Party is no different to the average European Communist Party. Its supporter base is surely being sucked into misery. Not only do they support withdrawing troops from Afghanistan so that the Tabliban can find their way back into power so they could provide a safe heaven for Al Qaeda, but they also want to take gun laws a step further and ban hand guns so that we can become government slaves again. As a Liberal guy, I would much rather see Labor being one of the two parties that dominate the Lower house in Federal Parliament!

touche comrade.
These days, if you're 18 and not a zealous greens supporter, then you're considered a right-wing anti-environment bible-belt nut.
. . .and if you're 24 and still a greens supporter, then you're considered an idiot.

Whoever votes for the Greens solely for their environmental policies is an idiot. Any elected party must obviously deal with a wide range of social, economic and political issues. Some of their policies you may agree with, some you may not.

Costello is trying to act dumbfounded at the possibility that the Greens party actually cares about more than environmental issues. He makes it seem as though the Greens party is trying to deceive and hide their policies from you, while at the same time admitting that the party has been clear about its position. He clearly dislikes the Greens and Lefties, but since he can't find a valid argument to make against them he resorts spin and smearing.

I'm a mix of both left and right politically, i go with what works.

The greens have some decent policies but they are totally opposed to nuclear power which i think is silly..

We have all this uranium we're not using...

Also, im for protecting the enviroment but not to such a huge degree it damages the economy, i think the greens will do that.

We need another true balance of power party like the democrats.

I however think that article is a thinly veiled ad hominem against the greens

I'm against the greens because they are really neither here nor there. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, the state of the economy is almost a reflection of the production of waste. The greater the growth, the more damage is done to the environment. Similarly, a rapid population ascent would indicate that more waste will be produced as a result of more resource being consumed.

The Greens know this. Nonetheless, they choose to sacrifice this aspect in order to appear more acceptable to capitalist politics. Environmental protection is quite the opposite to economic growth. There is no such thing as a middle ground. Until they actually sit down and accept the nature of their system, I would just continue referring to them as one of Labor's whipping boys.

I would say that people are beginning to vote for the Greens more because they are beginning to realise that they have more than just environmental policies.
