Oh well, at least if Australia loses, Ponting goes

Only as captain, I doubt they'd drop him entirely

Yep. They'd never drop him as a player unless he performed badly consistently (wait a minute...He's been playing terribly for the last year!?). But that raises the question, can Pup be captain? Considering the crap Vodafone ads, I think not. The Ashes postmortem shall be interesting. What I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall of that meeting. A fly with a shotgun.

Shot gun wouldnt be very damaging if you're a fly :P It would be very small ;)

then again australia has never had a former captain continue one playing, once they lose captaincy, they tend not to play on.

Ponting won't lose the captaincy in his mid-30's now. They will let him retire and probably hand over the reins to Michael Clarke. In the meantime, they both need to find some form with the bat, and quick.

EDIT: This Ashes thread now exceeds Australia's first innings total by over five-fold. Post #500  ;)

Yesterday was probably the worst day of test cricket I've ever seen from Australia.

1-1 Ashes series, everything on the line, and they serve up absolute pig shit. From here, the match and series are gone, so if there is one positive that can come out of this it will be a complete shake-up of an old and complacent team.

Phil Huges - blindingly obvious he does not have the technique to play international test cricket, at least at the moment. Jumps around, doesn't look settled, and seriously has only one shot he can score from (cut/square drive)

Ricky Ponting - shocking form with the bat, if he wasn't the skipper his place would be in question. Ideally I think after this series is the time to move on, but there is no logical replacement (not a fan of Michael Clarke).

Michael Clarke - also playing like a pile of shit at the moment, has a dodgy back too. I'd have Hodge in the team any day of the week over this bloke, but then the selectors refuse to do this.

Pace attack - overall pretty inconsistent. Seems that Johnson needs a gale force breeze over his shoulder to swing the bloody thing, and when that isn't there it's just fling and hope. Harris has bowled well. Unconvinced with Hilfy and Siddle though.

Steve Smith - similar to Huhges, don't think he's ready to play at the top level as of yet. Am pretty confident he will play a role in Australia's team in the future, but his time is not now. Doesn't look equipped to do so. Replacement...? Don't know who.

If this series is what it takes to sort out some major problems then I guess at least that will be a positive, because the garbage served up yesterday will not be tolerated.

We're too used to Australia winning, that's all.

Test Cricket isn't my favourite to bet on anyhow. Too long and unpredictable.

i agree, we're used to the old 06/07 line up with warne and mcgrath dominating every side.

honestly, who actually thought australia could win this test or series? england's skill level > australia's. the poms looked unprepared for the bouncy wicket at the waca and it showed.

seriously rofl'd at the front page of theage website this morning. it had a picture of siddle celebrating a wicket and the headline was - "siddle strikes raise spirit". the scoreboard read 2-259......

Tense, as in which players need sacking from the Australian side?

We need to import some South Africans!

Clarke isn't in great form as well :P

There is no one to pass it to!!! xD

I would say Australians should get used to the idea of Australian Cricket being rolled, by the likes of India, England, South Africa, and one day even New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
