Hi, I'm doing Hard Times next year (which no one seems to be doing).

Our context is - What is Reality?
We get to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (awesome movie).
I think some of the other books are Streetcar Named Desire and Enduring Love.
I can't remember all of them... probably because I haven't started reading any of them.... or any of my Lit texts.... I probably should...

I aiming for 40+ next year and if I work hard I may be able to get in the low 40's. I think I am fine for the essay and the analysis, but I am going to need so much help for the context. It would be a good idea to discuss in which format should we write for it in the exam, e.g. story, article, speech, etc.
2007 - History Revolutions (35)
2008 - English (40), Literature (37), National Politics (37), Maths Methods (32), History Renaissance (39)
ENTER: 93.20

2009 - Bachelor of Arts (ANU)
2010 - Bachelor of Classical Studies (ANU)
Majors: Ancient Greek, Ancient History, Archaeology

Anyone doing ESL next year too?

Ooh, I am. ^^

Thanks Nick, for the info on ESL. I had a look at the sample papers too...Section B looks a bit, erm, daunting.... XD

At our school, we're doing -

Maestro
Line
Crucible - Play in Four Acts
Look Both Ways

We actually did the Crucible in year 8, for Lit (as an elective). I liked it...but I still hope the other texts are good, too.

And I'm aiming for 45+ next year.
2010:

Don't let the film replace the text- it can be very dangerous. I wouldn't even recommend watching the movie. It looks convenient when you think about it, but you can be left referring and quoting elements of the movie, rather than the text.

I studied "I'm Not Scared" and "Romulus, My Father" last year- both of which had a film. My teacher strongly advised our class against watching them. So did the Chief Examiner- who ran a lecture I went to. By all means, if you think it will help you, watch it. But it can be a risky exercise.

agreed. one of the texts i studied in year 12 was The Quiet American, which was made into a film recently. there are, however, noticeable discrepencies between the film and the book, and the film highlights some themes and ignores others contrary to the novel. our teacher showed us the film after we'd finished analysing the novel and pointed out where it was wrong - presumedly for the lower students in our class who obviously hadn't bothered to read the text and had just watched the film. there's really not much point watching a film adaptation for literary purposes, in any case.

We studied that play in Lit this year ...
It was my favorite of all our texts...
I adore it.

I found the character More extraordinary... (I would elaborate but I don't want put in any spoilers)... Robert Bolt - is a very clever man

I actually saw the play in Melbourne in 2005.. It was fantastic. I'd be really interested to look at it as a book/literary piece.

I haven't looked at that one. I've only studied Hotel Sorrento by Hannie Rayson. It was great.

i saw the advanced screening of the kite runner already and yeah as some guy said before dont let the movie replace the book because seriously the movie is not fantastic its just ok. there is far more detail in the book and it is a very good novel to read in year 12, some emotional bits. the feeling in the movie is not quite there between the characters especially amir and baba, so yeah read the book you'll like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
