PC Calculator/Graphing Software?
« on: November 14, 2010, 11:37:30 am »

Hey, kind of a strange request, but does anyone have details of some good software that has the capabilities of a CAS calculator?
It'd be much easier if I didn't have to bring it home, but I an unable to find any reasonable software that can do the same functions?
I only need it for Physics/Chem/Spesh/Methods stuff and at a VCE level

Ideally would be something like Latex that can actually calculate, and be presented nicely
(ie it'd be better to have as opposed to x^2)

Any opinions would be appreciated..

I use graphmatica and i've never had any problems.

Mathematica is a step up again, but it's pretty damn powerful

Yeh I've got graphmatica, just want something that you can type multiple lines/equations into rather than the basic windows calculator.

Does mathematica do that sort of basic stuff? I know it's big on modelling and all that sorta stuff, but I don't need it for that...

No idea, I've only ever heard of it (I don't do CAS style stuff, the only software package i've used is for statistics)

Yeah, Mathematica is very very powerful. Solving equations is one thing, drawing graphics (2D and 3D plots, etc) is another, it is probably the most powerful CAS software there is at the moment, I use it extensively in my work.

But the catch is, it's not an easy feat trying to learn how to use it. It is essentially a functional programming language.

yeah that's why it turned me off, just want something simple that computes anything CAS related haha

Are there any latex editors that compute

Haha, I wish.

But do give mathematica a go. It is so immensely powerful, you'll thank yourself for it later on. Its graphics outputs are by far the 'prettiest' of all the other software. :)

At uni, we use MATLAB and it doesn't really tickle my fancy.

I don't need anything more than my physical calc, so I use classpad manager
