Taiwan is expendable. North Korea is a tiny blip on the map. A schoolyard bully. What does America really want? China. China is the new America.

That is quite an ignorant statement. Back in the days when China was a silly communist totalitarian regime and fought alongside NK in the Korean war, yes, America was shit scared because of the cold war and that both USSR and China had nukes. Nowadays, not really.

China/America aside, this time NK won't have any allies on their side, and has no chance of defeating the SK/America combo. If anything, I'd say America has the power to end the war within a day. I would like to understand the motivation behind this, though I doubt if this will turn into a war tomorrow.

Fucking pathetic is what it is.

I dont even see the need for all this shit, same goes for armies as well.

Nuclear bomb = instant death on immeasurable proportions - why have millions of troops when our weapons will eliminate all forms of life?

Pretty much because of this:

Mutually assured destruction. If nukes will be used, you won't be there to read about it the next day. So the compulsive human need to wage war is vicariously fulfilled in the next best thing: border skirmishes.

I wonder if a nuclear winter could ever occur from a nuclear war.

doubt it. Wars don't last 1 day. They take at least 6. . .
And America is still shit scared - that NK is selling nuclear technology to Iran, which in turn furthers the chance of a nuclear suitcase ending up in the hands of a few turban-clad nutters.
Being overtly content and satisfied with the international security situation because of an overbearing faith in America is very, very, dangerous. Ignorance? Touche.

While on the surface this looks significant, it happens all the time as far as i know.

This year soldiers from the two countries fired at each other across the border and that didnt start a war....neither did the sinking of one of the South Korean ships (allegedly... yeah right we all know they did it..) by a north korean ship

Business as usual in the 38th parallel.

The north is really a terrible terrible regieme, more so than any of us could imagine(semi long but its very shocking id encourage you guys to read)...

You're right, shit goes down there all the time, the two countires have technicaly been at war since the 1950s, just a very long ceasefire.. so it makes sense that there's still a lil fighting there and a hell of a lot of tension.

Just Pyongyang. It's a model capital specially designed to showcase NK to the world. Real NK is the countryside - the concentration camps and the rampant starvation.

So far apart from the USSR, USA and China most devices have yields in the kT range. North Korea's 06 test was a whimpy ~1kT fizzle and it's 09 test was between 5-15kT (see Milestone Tests). So as long as North Korea keeps making weak bombs and I'm pretty sure Iran has bad accuracy, I'll be able to sleep at night. Having said that any nuclear bomb which is used against another country is devastating, but I wanted to point out the technology isn't that strong.

'course you'll be able to sleep at night tucked away in a corner of the world nobody cares about.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Nk's nuclear program as technologically backward. I hope that you are correct, but evidence says otherwise. Lets not forget that it only took a few years for the US to develop nuclear bombs to drop on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Besides, all the theory is available online. It's simply a matter of being able to apply that theory and acquire weapons-grade plutonium. Nothing beyond the state capabilities of a country such as North Korea hell bent on nuclearization. You may sleep at night. Heaps of others don't.

Considering it took four months for the US to develop the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs (15kT each), Quantum's statement is probably justified as it took NK 20 years to produce a faulty bomb which recorded a 2-6 kT blast.

I wonder if it would be worth going to war with north korea, simply to end the bullshit there. How else is the dictatorship going to end? It looks like Kim-Jong Il already has a successor, so the cult of personality is simply going to pass down to him. It's like 1984 in the real world. There are no human rights, innocent people are starving and being tortured, and the power-crazed leader has the ability to construct WMDs. Why are we still trying to reason with him?

I don't know.

If we went to war with North Korea it would only end up killing helpless civilians and he would hide off somewhere (Basically what's happening at the moment in the Middle East). I'm pretty sure that if a war can be avoided then there would be no point in going to war.

If North Korea starts doing more of it's attacks, then a war may start.
