While supporting this cause is valid and just, it should be noted that this event in particular (the protest referred to by chrisjb) has been organised by the Socialist Alternative. They tend to commandeer any event they feel advances their worldview and will get them more members.

You must all be made aware that you will be attending a Socialist Alternative rally for Wikileaks. Not simply a rally to support Assange and Wikileaks, as you'd hope. The Socialist Alternative have extremely radicalised views which involve overthrowing democratic governments with a "workers revolution" and installing socialist regimes. If that appeals to you, then enjoy, but given that less than 0.1% of the Australian populace identifies with this group, I have a feeling that the vast majority of members will benefit from knowing that going to this event will associate them with such people and their rather distasteful views :)

^ I can agree with an orginisation's views on a particular issue without agreeing with them as a whole. I'm with them in regards to wikileaks and equal love, but I would never attend their marxism rallies etc. Also, from some of their rallies that I have been to in the past they don't go all out and call to 'overthrow democratic governments with workers revolutions', they generaly stick to the issue that they're demonstrating (mainly to get media onside and not get politicians offside I asssume)... anyway, that's just my experience from their equal love rallies that I've been to. Perhaps you have had different experiences. It's up to you in the end if you attend or not, and if you chose to not attend because of their stance on other issues then that's your choice and that's fine.

You should see them on Monash Clayton campus. Some of the shit they say is downright feral.

But that's fair enough, I just wanted to inform everyone what they were getting into. And you're right that organisations with which you largely disagree can also have things that you do agree with and if you're fine with associating with them in regards to those things that you agree with then more power to you. I would never tell people to attend or not attend an event, I'm simply warning about the creators and organisers of the event because it hasn't been made clear in the event and is almost subversive in that it's never mentioned once.

+1 to what enwiabe said. I've talked to them on numerous occasions, and it's been a total facepalm to every word out of their mouthes.

Personally, I would advise against going to it. First of all, it does nothing at all. If you want to further Assange's cause, the time at the 'rally' could be better spent reading a book. Secondly, why would anyone want to associate themselves with some idiotic bunch of militant trade unionists?

Yeah, mastercard and whatnot. It was prety impresive, but most of them are back up now.... Perhaps tonight/tomorrow morning when America is awake again they'll hit them again.
