Collective UMAT thread for 2011 cohort

Hi guys, can we have discussion + resources + tips in this thread.

I'll start it off, it seems to me like section one encompasses a lot of reading + comprehension. I'm learning to speed read whilst heightening my levels of data retention. Invariably, if you can read quickly and effectively, you will smash section 1!

Hopefully, I'll be able to post up many many UMAT files in the coming days, for some reason, VN isn't allowing me to post up pdfs atm?

I have however got many many files I'd like to share with the VN cohort.

Wasn't one already made? (i.e. this.)

In any case, it doesn't really matter. =D

VN isn't allowing me to post up pdfs atm?

I don't think anyone can post up anything due to the updates on VN/the "revolution" - still fixing it, I think.

I think the purposes of this thread are more to promote discussion and help, rather then just mere resources. I really think speed reading will help for section one!

On speed reading, there are cheap courses one can do to improve it. They run at my school once a year (don't remember the name of it though).

The way to learn speed reading is to use a finger/pen to trace the line and read it as a whole rather than every word slowly and individually. Every course is just a variation of that.

It's something that really benefits from a lot of application, so if you don't read a lot then you need to start

+1 That's completely true. The course at our school promotes reading groups of words (3 or 4), what they call 'chunking', rather than each word separately. Just a matter of practice though.

Yep what Russ said is right, i remember my english teaching teaching us to speed read. Use your finger and just trace the line very quickly and try to read groups of words rather tahn single words.

The biggest thing to avoid if you want to read faster is vocalising each word in your head as you read it. You can easily read 3x faster if you stop saying each word you read in your head. Unfortunately, this takes a lot of practice and the difficulty varies depending on what you're reading.

gwood ideas! i also find that if i read the questions first, in a comprehension scenario, it motivates my brain to actually quickly read the text in front of me, not just skim and forget.

Have you tried to speed read?

I actually find my retention of information is far better when I speed read as opposed to normal read. This doesn't help for the textbooks though, need to think about what I'm reading to make sense of it.

Yep i usually speed read when i read newspapers etc but depending on what you're reading you should regulate the speed at whcih you're reading. If im reading the text book i wont read too slow, nor too fast but more of an in between speed. Because if you go too slow, you'll get distracted, too fast you wont understand it all or you will forget it. just a matter of finding the rigght speed for different tasks

Reading chunks of words - has anyone effectively put that in to use here?

Finished the Harry Potter series in three and a half days... (had a lot of snacks and cricket via radio to keep me going though)
