Noob at public transport Myki vs Metcard
« on: December 29, 2010, 01:46:49 pm »

I rarely use public transport and when I do, I use metcards only.
Just wondering since next year I need a yearly, I would be using a Myki right?
What is different with Myki in terms of what I do when exiting/entering trains, trams and buses?

Thanks guys!

Actually I think they still use Metcards for yearlys, so you can if you want. However, with a myki, you can pay for the exact number of days that you want unlimited travel for as opposed to the strict 365 day limit on a Metcard yearly, so this way you can avoid paying for the period during the Summer holidays and such.

As for using it, just swipe your card when you enter and exit any form of public transport, rather than just when you enter with a Metcard. If you've got a yearly though, I don't think it actually matters though really since you've already paid for the entire year, so they can't exactly charge you more if you don't swipe off.

Can tertiary students even buy yearly metcards/mykis?

The only real difference is that you have to remember to touch off when you are exiting public transport (except when you are travelling entirely in zone 1 on a tram, or something), otherwise you'll get charged for a full day even if you were only using it for an hour or something.

It's also slightly cheaper than using a Metcard:
http://www.myki.com.au/Fares/Metro-fares/myki-metro-fare-calculators/default.aspx

On that link you can also compare a myki pass (pre-determined period e.g. monthly) and myki money (just chuck money on card and use whenever) to see which one would be cheaper according to your needs.

Yeah there's no such thing as a yearly concession (weird, I thought myki offered that option)

You can get a yearly concession on myki... I had one this year but ti's for secondary and primary only.
Quote
Student Pass

If you are eligible for a Primary or Secondary VPT Student Concession Card, you are eligible for a Student Pass. The pass is now loaded directly onto a concession myki when you buy it.

Student Passes are only available for certain zones and come as Yearly, 1st half year and 2nd half year passes.

The type of Student Pass you need depends on your travel area:

The Victorian Student Pass gives you unlimited travel on metropolitan trains, trams and buses, on all regional town bus services and all V/Line train and coach services operating wholly within Victoria.
Regional Transit Student Passes are valid for unlimited travel on buses on either the Geelong, Ballarat or Bendigo transit bus systems and limited V/Line rail services.

But if this is for uni you can still get a concession myki but you can use either myki money or a myki pass

myki pass or myki money?

myki will suit you, whether you are a daily or an occasional traveller.

Your myki can hold a myki pass (travel days) or myki money (a dollar amount) and if you want you can have both stored on your myki at the same time. If you have both, your myki pass will be used first and your myki money will only be debited if you travel outside your myki pass zone(s).

Choosing what is right for you depends on what kind of traveller you are.

myki pass is best for you if:
you travel often or commute
you normally travel in the same zone(s)
you’re after the best value available for regular travel.

myki money is best for you if:
your travel patterns vary and you want flexibility
you like to pay as you go but still want good value.

Or you pay the equivalent of a monthly/weekly onto your myki and it works the same way. The site I linked above will tell you which way is cheaper depending on how often and where you need to travel

AND

They both cost the same amount of money! Personally, I prefer the tower (burjk halifa <-- tallest building in the world!).

Scrapping myki would be a massive waste of more money.
