2nd hand laptops: A false economy?

I got quite excited when I saw a MacBook 2nd hand for £350 (I'm in England; the going rate at Apple stores is £850), however someone said buying 2nd hand was risky, as the machine could be significantly substandard and/or break down before long.
What do we think? And what are all the variables/caveats one should look out for if buying second hand?

Anyone? Would *you* consider buying a laptop costing 70% less than the going rate, from a private individual?

Yes, I don't really mind. However, I have my father who believes in not buying second-hand electronics. Ofcourse they are not as good as brand new, but I think if you take care of it well then it would last pretty good.
