I'm still figuring which major to do: Neuroscience or Pharmacology. I'm trying to avoid prac subjects as much as I can and neuroscience is one that does not have any and I did well in neurophysiology. I actually liked second year Pharmacology, not sure that third year pharmacology will still be enjoyable.

Are neuroscience subjects more rote learning or application (eg human physiology types). I always thought the latter but apparently there's a lot of memorization    :o:-* :-* :-* :o

You'll hear in 2nd year Biomed that the HSF major isn't the only rational preparation for the MD. According to a few lecturers it's the Pharmaoclogy/Micro/Immuno majors that also help just as much as HSF, perhaps even more. Roy-Robins Browne (who lectures in MCB) is the coordinator for the foundational biomedical subject in MD1 and he said that students who did these majors did better for that subject at least. Not sure if he was just trying to encourage us to do the Micro/Immuno majors though...

On that note, I think i remember Roy saying that those who pick majors that are not the most common ones people think they need to do well in med (i.e. HSF, phys, etc) are the people who in fact do well in med, whether it be immuno, cell bio, pharm, genetics...

We got any Classics majors or Law & Justice minors around (I'm just curious about LAWS20008 - Legal Language, which is a compulsory Law breadth)? I'd like to get your personal opinion and advice on the courses, subjects etc. Just committed to a Classics major (this better help me with Roman Law, as promised) and not sure if I've mistakenly committed academic suicide.

Law and Justice isn't as much of a worry....or should it be?

I'd say 70% memorization, 30% understanding but I found it to be more enjoyable than my science electives

Edit: There's also extensive crossover between neuroscience and neurophysiology. Additionally, SMCF is only made up of 22 examinable lectures (excluding the first lecture and the time when the MST is held) + 5 workshops (the workshops themselves are mainly based on understanding)

I can get MIIM20002 up on Dropbox tomorrow sometime.

On a side note, I'm looking for any MIIM30011, MIIM30014, MIIM30016 or MIIM30002 lecture notes/resources. PM me if anyone is able to help :)

Got a friend who finished her first year in Science enrolling in 7 Science subjects and 1 breadth subject next year. She is trying to keep her options open so that she doesn't have to choose her major until 3rd year(quite common I suspect.)

The subjects she picked are ANAT20006, PHYS20008, BCMB20002, BCMB20005, three 2nd year Maths subjects in the pure maths specialisation including Real Analysis, and French 7.

Would you guys think that the workload in her 2nd year is too much? Should she choose one more breadth subject instead of stacking science subjects to keep her options open? Her first year was pretty standard; 2 chem, 2 biol, 2 maths, 2 french subjects. Any advice/suggestions is helpful. :)

She should consider doing the maths diploma.

If you want to do the biochem major, it's possible to do BCMB20005 in third year. You do BCMB20005 in Semester 1 third year, and BCMB30010 in semester 2. It's semi common to do this, only problem is you can't do a research project.

For what it's worth, I didn't settle on my major until the last week of January this year.
BSc (Hons) 2015 Melbourne

PhD 2016-??? Melbourne

I want to be an architect.

Just to piggyback off of this - if anyone could pm, dropbox or link to finance 1 tute sheets, that'd be amazing.
