What's the logic behind putting the "mid-semester break" 10 weeks into a 12 week semester?
the biggest reason is so that it aligns with the australian university games. This is so that the hundreds of kids that need to go interstate for the week to compete do not miss out on class. it sucks from an academic standpoint but alot of people go to the AUG. it is not just to compete but as support staff/helpers/etc. also its one of the biggest events on the australian sporting circuit with a fair amount of olympic and commonwealth games scouting eg; if you jump a certain height in high jump the officials will figure out if you fit the nationality requirements and see if theres an avenue for you to represent the country. similiar with other team sports like rugby 7's they are quite heavily scouted. also it's one of the biggest competitive rivalries that the universities have between each other, although it can be almost invisible if you arent a participant in it. but the universities definitely like to show off their guns in different sports and if you look at some of the sports like swimming it is basically the universities saying to each other "look how good/rich we are this guy is goin to the olympics and he chose to study with us not you

"
many unis also have quite lucrative scholarships for elite athletes (especially usyd). it ends up being a huge event with most of the events being livestreamed and available to watch on youtube LOL. but yeah thats one of the main reasons why mid sem break is at the time period where it is.
(on a side note uni games is sooo fun i highly recommend anyone to go if you ever get the chance)
