Thanks :D
So the questions in the question booklet given to us should be enough?

Well...I'm not really saying that exactly?  I mean like, you need to take the initiative to find out what to do yourself.

You all do!  Including you MelonBar!  There is no correct way to study for university, you need to find out what works for you.  If I were you I would have a look in the textbook for some of the information that you discussed and didn't understand in class today, look over your notes after that and see if they make any more sense.   Try google and see if someone else can explain what you're having trouble with in a way that makes it easy for you to understand.  And then after you do those things, go back and listen to the part of the lecture you didn't understand and see if it makes any more sense.  But really it's like, entirely up to you.

As for prereading, I never read things before my lectures.  I don't absorb any information unless I do the reading afterwards.  But if you approach your subject with an 'I can't be fucked' attitude you'll probably be right to pass or maybe do better than a pass...if you want to do really well, I'd be searching for the motivation :3

hey guys, how do we even study for university lol ?

so I had my first chemistry lecture today, and the dude got stuck into his content and began talking about orbitals and stuff, which I have no recollection of whatsoever from chem units 1 and 2. so I sat there and tried to follow... and I figured I'd get home and study this stuff so that I'm not completely lost by the next lecture...

but then i realized i have no idea what to do

am i meant to just relisten to the recording? i have a pdf copy of the textbook so far but he didn't even reference it, so im guessing I have to check it myself? but there's like pages and pages of the same topic so I have no idea which part is relevant to the course and which isn't...

thanks lol

also I saw lecture notes for sale at the uni book shop, what are those? I thought lecture notes were available on the lms.

im just lost in general

cheers

Check out the subject reviews and ratings thread on the UoM board, some chem students (including myself) wrote what our study techniques were :)

Re-listening to lectures is okay, but it's best for when you are really stuck on a certain concept. Check out the contents of your textbook to see what you covered today, e.g. if it were orbitals you can hit the find button (command + f on macs) and type in something like sp3 orbitals and it should give you the pages where it discusses them. Sometimes the textbook along with the lecture notes help to explain things in a clearer and concise way.

As mavisgibbons stated, the internet is abundant with resources. I used youtube a couple of times for chemistry problems, like with nomenclature and stuff :)

But most of all, remember that this is only your first day! Things should start to make way more sense in a week or so with tutorials and everything

Wowee the line inside AND outside the co-op bookshop today was massive.
Couldn't get my lab manual for chem and the online store isn't accepting my member # for the discount.

What do. >.>

Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to come off as having a terrible attitude, its just seems a little daunting to have 50+ Pages each subject as 'prescribed pre-reading' haha. I'll just have to get used to it! :)

buy the book online take receipt and bank statement back and they can't refuse you a refund of the price difference between ur budget and the actual price you would be charged with the discount hard it been applied by their policies

it's their technical fault, so you can claim it

Is it for lectures or pracs? I don't know much about lectures, but it is definitely useful in pracs. Either increases your chances of finishing within the time window or letting you leave early.

Most of them are pre-lecture I think.

I don't know where to put this but do we need to know the formal definition of limits for Calculus 2, or just the informal one?

You are better off asking your tutor or failing this, seeing your lecturer after class rather than asking an internet forum.

Having said that, when I did Calculus 2, you needed to know the formal definition that they gave you, as the answer needed to get full makrs for the question usually encompassed a more thorough explanation than what was required when dealing with limits in vce.

gonna sound mega jaffy here, but is pre-reading actually useful? theres so much for some subjects i just cannot be fucked

What is a jaffy?

It depends on the person. Certainly you can H1 the subject having never done a pre-reading, though.

With respect to the 'how you study?' Everyone is different and I'd actually contend you're beter off trying a few diffrent techniques as opposed to saying, 'Oh look, that person did really well, this means that X technique works.' It varies on what you want to get out of the subject as well. I also feel that you need to figure out a few of these things for yourself, when you get your grad job, there won't be an internet forum and a handbook that comes and tells you what to do. There's no exams, but the unemployment line beckons if you don't adapt. So, it's better you learn how to think for yourself now and adapt to self-learning and problem solving. Your first-year doesn't count for much anyway, however, you can learn valuable lessons from your mistakes that will put you in good stead for future years if you use it correctly.

In prereading, I came across stuff that I don't even understand...
Staggered conformers are more stable (lower in energy) than eclipsed conformers, due to reduced steric interactions
I checked it up in the textbook and still don't get it. Can I just email the lecturers/people?

Yes, you can of course email them but if it was in pre-reading, they will probably explain it to you next lecture anyway.

Weird and random question, but does anyone know if lecturers/professors tend to keep the level of difficulty of the special consideration exams the same as the actual exams? I need to gauge whether or not I should resit... Risk vs return.

It's used in Physics 2 as well but not after first year. Also, as an aside, it's an amazing textbook - I would honestly recommend learning from that over lectures...

thanks for the reply man, so I think I will invest in it. another question.. I just transferred from one subject to another, but the LMS  doesn't allow me to view the content for the new subject i enrolled in. It says guests are not allowed? What do I do? I have transferred to microeconomics btw and I missed the lecture on Tuesday, was there a tutorial on Tuesday too?
