Sorry for all these questions but: is it a good idea to immediately follow a lecture with a tutorial for the same subject?

Yeah, not an issue. Normally the stuff you cover in tutes refers to lecture material from the previous week (where 1st week is normally introductory stuff) so you won't be at any advantage by doing it at the end of the week.

I mean, if you have a lecture 10-11, would an 11-12 tute be beneficial or is it better to have a break between the same subject?

All classes typically start and finish 5 minutes after and before their actual times, so if you have a 10am lecture it starts at 10:05 and finishes at 10:55, so you have ~10 minutes to get from one class to the other at 11:05. If they're not horrifically far apart in terms of distance, I'd recommend stacking them next to each other in this example.

Can anyone tell me if COMP10001 is streamed? My mock timetable right now is really iffy and it's modeled assuming that the subject is streamed. Also, was wondering if the W1 and W2 on the website refer to two separate one hour workshops for the subject to be attended?

I wish you guys still offered a bachelor of laws so I could do Law at Melbourne like the rest of my family :(

Had to be the first one to go to Monash for that reason alone  :'(

Feel free to PM me about anything, happy to give advice about school and/or uni.

I'm taking COMP10001 this semester as well - no idea if the classes are streamed tbh, guess we'll have to wait till class registration tmr to find out.
I think the workshops are separated, the info on the 2018 handbook seems inaccurate

Hi I'm a first year and have a few questions about my mock up timetable

1. Do chemistry and physics practicals run every week?
On my portal under estudent it says that every second week a bio practical will be replaced with a 1 hour skills workshop but doesnt say anything for chem, physics or psych. If they dont run every week do we get another class or spare time instead?

2. I have a few back to back lectures which I've heard is fine sicne they start 5 mins later / end 5 mins earlier but I have a couple instances where I have a tutorial then a lecture. Do tutorials and pracs also start / end 5 mins later / earlier or will I only really have 5 minutes to go from the physics building to chem building??

3. Silly question aha but are we allowed food in lectures? A couple days I have 3 back to back lectures and idk if I can go that long concentrating without a snack

thank you! :)

1. I don't know about psychology or physics but chemistry pracs do not run every week. You will do a total of 6 for the semester but the timetabling differs depending on what group you get placed in (the timetable will come out during first week as there are no pracs for chemistry during week 1). It depends on the subject (again not too sure about psychology or physics) whether another class is running when you don't have a prac. No chemistry prac means no class. For biology you will have a 1 hour skills workshop instead.

2. Tutorials also follow the five minute rule. Practicals do not. For biology pracs, you generally need to stay the entire time and I've had pracs finish exactly after 2 hours, but generally they try to finish 5-10 minutes early. Chemistry practicals you can leave whenever you are finished.

3. You can eat during lectures. I recommend doing it before the lecture starts and if you do have to eat during the lecture please eat something that won't be noisy. Other students around you will get annoyed (and maybe even the lecturer) if you are eating something that makes a lot of noise (chips, apples etc.)

Does anyone know the reason behind automatic class allocation?

Probs because there's only one lecture/tutorial timeslot for that class.

Some lectures in the subjects I enrolled for got automatically slotted into my timetable.

Right. That's what I thought too

Yeah, all of this is so confusing, and most of the lectures are pretty late into the day. I'm not really a big fan of scheduling here  :-\
