To those who did chemistry1..should i get both textbooks.. Do you actually use them.. For what? And how did u study for them? thanks xX

I used both of them but if you're just going to get one get Zumdahl because you'll use it way more.
And, you can probably find Org Chem online and just use the pdf for that and then buy the Zumfdjgdigj dude I don't even know if I'm spelling his name right.

I used PDFs for both McMurry and Zumdahl. Zumdahl you definitely need. McMurry is pretty helpful but not altogether necessary, the lectures notes more or less cover everything thoroughly.

o______O i got through the semester without using either textbook. i found copies of both of them on the internet (shameless; but didn't feel like i needed them. prof. rizzacasa and abrahams are both amazing lecturers and i found going to/watching lecturers was absolutely enough for their topics.
there's also a lot of consultations available. i went in once and had one of the tutors explain to me like three weeks worth of lectures XD;;

I'd say yeah they're worth doing for practice if not to just get used to using all the equations for internal energy etc. In fact, from Gases and onwards the lecturers actually prescribe exercises from the Zumdahl book. If you need more practice borrow the study guide from the ERC, there's a fair few exercises you can do there complete with solutions.

I wouldn't say it's a necessity though, but for a dumbass like me doing all those questions helped a lot!

Yeah I didn't use the text much in Chem 1 but I did a lot for Chem 2.
And feel free to find it on the internet - I don't like using PDFs if I'm going to be using them often so I usually just get the text if I find it useful enough and I've used it since for GAMSAT study and stuff so I don't think it was too much of a waste :3

The only time I ever used a Chemistry textbook was to look at hemiacetal & acetal formation from McMurray.

Didn't buy the chemistry books and never felt the need to use them, the lecturers were really good for chem imo

Buy Zumdahl and DO the set questions. It makes the exam so, so, SO much easier and you'll be very well-prepared, since they set questions from the book that cover the scope of what they expect you to be able to recall (though reading through their notes as well is good, particularly for the last two inorganic lectures).

Can we use pencils in maths exams?....my lecturer told us through out the semester that he doesn't want pensils

Then...do what your lecturer tells you!  Your exam is usually not a 'write in the paper' style situation, usually it's in script books, if you need to cross shit out and you need more script books nobody is going to deny you.
I don't see the harm in using pen, it might look messier but if that's what they have asked for (multiple times by the sounds of things) then you should follow the instruction.
