A bit random but I just bought a new computer and before I purchase one, I was wondering if there is any way students can get a free copy of windows?

IIRC you can get some really high-quality version for a discounted price, but I forget how to apply for it. Go and ask at Dick Smith, that's where I was told about it (though I haven't bought it yet :s) or just Google it?

Study trip to Moscow State Uni just got the 100% go ahead confirmation! I'm going to the Motherland... bitches!

I've mentioned it before, but it only just got the confirmation today.

And really got to commend myself on planning my seasons badly and getting stuck with a 15 month winter. That won't be so fun.

More details about how to get this study trip plz, if studying Russian means I will get to go to Moscow paid by the uni, then that is my breadth for next sem.

They marked the roll at least when I did it last year. I can't remember whether it was compulsory or not, if it was not I am unsure as to why they would do this.

I would recommend going to them, your tutor is going to mark your midsem, assignments etc, so it's probably good to know what they recommend you to do etc.

Nope, not compulsory.

My tutor forgot to bring the role half the time last semester and he didn't make it a big deal. I think my final attendance was something like 6/12... and what midsem for calc 2?
It is probably best to go to the tutes as that's the only way to check the problem sheets' solutions/get feedback etc.

The structure must have changed a fair bit. I was under the impression there would be a midsem because there was one in both semester 1 and 2 last year. But this doesn't (hopefully) change the argument that your tutor will be marking your non-exam assessed tasks, and will provide you tips for the exam.

What is the purpose of the roll then?

don't they rig it a little so if you're on the borderline of a fail but went to all the tutes and stuff, they might bump up your score to a pass or something?

or maybe the roll is to scare people into attending :P

Both are probably true!

I tended to attend most of them because the tutor I had would go through some points of the course that I found helpful. What they want you to know is also good. Both of my maths subjects did that, and subsequently both have been my highest scores. It would save so much time, so I didn't need to study lots and still understand it. My maths scores in VCE weren't my highest, they were low-mid. Of course I wouldn't account it all to this, but it helped me. So it would be good to observe if the same was true for anyone else.

my math tutes were the most useless things ever;; my tutor was super condescending and unhelpful. i mean, i get that he wanted us to try do the problems ourselves, but even when we were completely stuck and making zero progress he still wouldn't help. =.=
i've heard good things about some of the other tutors for the subject though @@

whats with the midsemester break being so late in semester two? D:> theres only like, three weeks of class between the break and swotvac. :< is the first part of the semester as draining as i imagine it'll be?

Unsure. But I prefer it that way. Don't you normally find the latter part of the semester to be more draining?

Not trying to sound like a hero, but all of my subjects are maths/physics/engineering and I honestly don't bother making a timetable on timetable day. I just wait until a few days later, work out which tutes I want to go to, rock up to those tutes and tell the tutor they are the only ones I can make because of work and then they add me to the list. It's far far more flexible than you think.
