Anyone got an idea as to what WAM you typically need when transferring (end of year) to Melb Commerce from another uni?

Does anyone know if MD results come out on the 'official' result release date (1st Dec by 3pm)? Thanks

They didn’t last year. They were a few days late

Is doing a 3rd year breadth subject compulsory?
I've switched over from actuarial to Fin/Econ if that makes any difference.

Not too sure about commerce and your major specifically but I think the rule is at least one at level 2 or 3 - so not really, you could do level 2 instead :)

Hey everyone!

I noticed that results have just been released for Semester 2 - best of luck, I hope you all receive the scores you deserve.

For those of you studying Biomedicine, I was just wondering if it was possible to study two languages as part of this degree? I'm hoping to complete a Diploma of Languages in German next year (assuming I choose to attend Melbourne Uni), but I'd also like to study either Spanish or French (haven't quite decided yet, haha).

If not, is it possible to study two languages as part of the Science pathway?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.  :)
Hey, sorry for the late response.
I'm currently doing BSci and although I haven't done languages, I've explored doing a diploma. I won't be able to answer all your questions but I'll try to give a general idea :)
Languages aren't part of the science degree so you'd have to study them as breadth or a diploma.
If you wanted to do a diploma of languages in German, that requires 8 subjects (ie a full year). You can fast-track your diploma by doing the language in your breadth. You can cross-credit up to 4 subjects from your main degree (from your breadth) to the diploma, meaning you could do 4 German subjects in your breadth and the other 4 subjects as part of the diploma (ie only adding half a year onto your degree).
If you want to do 2 languages, it'll depend on how proficient you want to be in them. I don't think I'd recommend doing 2 diplomas (I'm not sure if it's possible to do 2 language diplomas, but there's probably a way) because that would mean around 1.5 years of extra study. You can do 4-6 breadth subjects in BSci, so you could allocate 4 to German for the diploma, and use 2 for another language, or could switch them and stay at uni a bit longer or do some as summer subjects (so you finish earlier). You can also do exchange to one of those countries to become more fluent.

I'd recommend speaking to one of the UoM course advisors, they'll probably have a lot of information :)
Good luck with your studies!

has anyone done BLAW20002 (February intensive)? I've enrolled but I noticed there's an essay worth 80% which I'm a bit concerned about lol

Is Melbourne Uni really competitive? I received my atar yesterday and it was higher than I expected, so I'm considering changing my preference from BCom at Monash to BCom at Melbourne. My only concern is that I got a 95.8, just 0.8 higher than the clearly-in atar, and that I won't be able to compete, any insight would be appreciated!  :)

as long as that is what you want to do there is no real problem. Looking at last years statistics nearly 23% of the cohort had ATARs less than 95.00 so you definitely aren't at the bottom. But even if you were below 95 there is no reason you can't compete as university is a lot different to highschool and generally the people who are able to adapt quickly do well.

Your ATAR means little in uni.

Also just from my (biased) perspective, UoM comm offers comparatively better prospects for employment vs straight comm degree at Monash (minor prestige advantage, development advantage, etc).

Thanks! It wasa that "minor prestige" that tipped me over to choosing Melbourne over Monash

Hi, I was wondering if SEAS applicants are supposed to receive an email from unimelb confirming that their applications have been accepted? Some people have received a confirmation from Monash regarding the guarantee

Hey guys,

(mods) Wasn't sure where to put this, so feel free to move my post.

Asking for a friend since he doesn't have an account here. So basically my friend wants to study MD after Bsc (as he didn't get a high enough ATAR to be considered for biomedicine), and he just wants to know whether he'll be studying in the classes with the students doing biomedicine. So lets say if I were to do chemistry for biomedicine in my first semester, is it possible for him to be in my class (will he be even allowed to do it?)?

Also in regards to the gamsat, are there any subjects recommended to do before siting the gamsat? How long is it valid for, and what would be a competitive score and WAM/GPA to score an interview?

Thanks,

A lot of the subejcts biomed students take are taken by biomed + science students, but a few of the compulsory biomed ones are for biomed only. subjects like chemistry for biomedicine are for biomed students only and for these subjects this will generally be pointed out in the subject handbook

Hi guys, I'm in the process of deciding between degrees and was hoping someone could give a general idea of what it's like at melbuni. I got a high enough atar to get into the course I'm looking into but I'm also worried that I'll still be judged. I'm happy with my atar, but there are going to be people with atars high than mine. Also, what's the transition from year 12 to uni like. I had some hip cups in year 12 due to illness and stuff and I managed to push through it, but I'm now worrying over my ability to cope with uni (more work, new people, different way of doing everything etc.)

No one talks about atar in uni - like at all. Honestly you will be judged more if you continually talk/boast about whatever ATAR you got in year 12!! There is to some extent that sense of prestige and elitism in the air at first, but it gets old pretty quickly. Your ATAR rank doesn't hold true for the rest of your life, i certainly did worse grade wise this year than friends who had lower ATARs in year 12 and vice versa.
I also had some hiccups in year 12 due to health stuff, and tbh my first year of uni (this past year) was hard to adjust to. I've felt really supported regardless with some pretty good resources and support (ie. student equity, careers stuff, etc).
