Hey. Since I'm not really sure if I want to continue Actuarial anymore (really a 50/50 all things considered), I am thinking of switching from Accelerated Maths 2 to Calculus 2. Can anyone help me answer these questions?:

-Are the lecture recordings sufficient or will I have to rock up? If I switch I probably will be skipping most/all of the lectures and watching at home. In AM2, I can't really skip as lecturer writes examples on whiteboard

-Are the assignments doable individually? I don't know anyone in Calc2 (or at least anyone I would like to work with) so I will probably be doing the assignments mostly by myself instead of seeking help from a friend whos doing AM with me.

AM1 caused an incredible amount of anxiety for me but I ended with 76 which was equal lowest mark while I was putting far more work in it during the semester than any of my other subjects, and studying it non-stop for over a week for the exam (with no other subjects).

-Is 85+ in calc2 achievable?

 Thanks

Hey there! To answer your first question, it depends on the lecturer, but from what I recall when I did Calc 2 is that some lecturers will also write on the whiteboard, or write on the lecture slides using the cameras. However, the downside to this is that there are two cameras, and only one will record. Hence, you might miss half of the examples. If you're worried about this, you could ask some people in tuts what they wrote!

The assignments are definitely doable individually - I had a few friends doing Calc 2 at the same time, but whenever I got an assignment I would do it myself first and found it relatively easy. When we would compare and discuss solutions, if I did get anything wrong, it'd be a drop of a negative or something silly like that. Getting almost the full 20% is relatively easy (of course, if you put in the effort!). That being said, don't be worried about not having friends in Calc 2. I'm sure you will meet some nice people in the tutorials which you can discuss answers with as well.  :)

An 85+ is also achievable. Don't underestimate your ability - like all subjects, if you cover all the content thoroughly (i.e. review notes, tut sheets, problem sheets and understand the content), you'll be set for the final exam. No tricks.

Good luck with it all!  :D

I did Calc 2 last year semester two and the only lecturer that always used the recorded doc cam was Thomas Quella but I don't think he's lecturing this semester. I'd probably try and find out if any of the other lecturers do it properly but as stated before, the subject coordinator Christine Mangelsdorf doesn't as well as another lecturer, Antoinette Tordesillas.

There's 4 streams with 4 lecturers this semester so I should be good. Anyway, I'm setting up my timetable in a way that I can attend all the lectures.

Hi,

I am first year biomedicine student, so will be able to answer your questions. Generally throughout the week, I have 10 lectures (3 for each of my core subjects, and 1 for my breadth (breadth is like the electives you have in school)). You are able to watch the lectures at home since they are recorded, and hence most students don't end up coming to them. Then you have the tutorials (they are basically classes with 15-20 people, and a teacher that helps you do questions, or understand the content from lecture), and I have 4 of those, one for each subject. I am at uni for around 2-3 hours a day on average (usually early mornings cause biology lectures are at 8), which works really well with a part time job and whatever other activities you want do, as you are able to make your own timetable!
you do biomed @ melb!  :O same

Hundreds of people do biomed at melb though. Chances are low tbh.

Biomed is a pretty small world, so is Comm actually!
You'd think that with over 1500 students in any given year it'd be huge, but with the way personal networks are growing you tend to know so many people you wouldn't believe! :)

Yeah that’s a good point. 1500 is a pretty big number but 3 years is also a long time to build networks!

This might be a long shot, but does anyone have any experience in using the unimelb counselling services to get a diagnosis/test for ADHD and/or a prescription?

You'd probably be better off at the Melbourne Uni clinic? A counsellor can't diagnose mental illnesses, nor can they provide prescriptions.

hey everyone is having 3 late WDs bad? I have 2 atm and probably will have another soon :'( I also have 2 fails but I had legitimate reasons for all this

Should I just stick this subject out? I don't want to risk failing or getting a really bad grade :(

Doesn't really affect me since I get extensions, but do tutors actually practice the 10% penalty per working day rule for assignments?

Was told by a tutor (who is a sub coordinator) in private that no one does that, there are other ways of penalising if it's very late like one week, such as marking it more harshly especially if it's sloppy work, but it won't be as bad as 10% per day.

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if a biomed or science student could give me insight as to what the first year workload is like compared to year 12?

Thanks so much in advance  :)
