Will my second year be insanely hard if I do the subjects that can lead to majors in Biochemistry, Human structure and function and chemistry while leaving my two remaining breadth subjects until third year? :S
2012-2014. BSc: Neuroscience. University of Melbourne.
2015-2018. Doctor of Optometry. University of Melbourne.

Unlikely to respond to any PMs these days.

What's a typical first year line up for BBiomed?

In terms of hours, subjects etc.

Handbook: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2013/B-BMED

For the hours check the "subject options" section and click each subject. E.g.

Biomolecules and cells: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2013/BIOL10002

It shows the time commitment there.

Yeah it's hard to develop a good system and stick to it. Summaries of lecture notes aren't entirely pointless- I guess I just try to simplify them as much as possible. Some examples include:

- avoiding complicated words other than the sort of jargon you are expected to know or using mnemonics
- making some sort of song with a catchy rhythm

It's also important to be willing to look up other resources like recommended textbooks as well as prescribed textbooks when you need to. Other resources include tutorial workbooks and writing tutorial notes (for example they might show you how to solve a math problem in a simpler way that you may like to note).

The assessments that are given to students before exams are often useful to use as part of your study. This way you know what topics in lectures you need to look at again.

Honestly though when it comes to exam time I just consult my tutors/ lecturers on topics that i've found hard to cover, work with a study group, do practice exams, and memorize lecture notes. The last one (memorizing) is a bit tricky though because it depends on your course,  sometimes there are subjects that revolve around application-type problems so understanding math formulas by knowing how to apply them correctly obviously helps. With chemistry I had to resort to memorizing some things (like organic structures) and completing all the textbook questions, prac exam questions, tutorial questions and the online worksheets.
Thanks for the reply! :D
Yeah I suppose it does come down to how much effort you're willing to put in, you seem to have some good study habits that work well for you!
I think I'll just repeat some tutorial questions and try memorising as much from lecture slides as I can.

There are so many majors to choose from what are the most popular, most common and most interesting majors? Biochemistry and microbiology have caught my eye

Are there prerequisites for breadth subjects? For instance I want to do a BA with a physics breadth (astrophysics related, my weird interest :p) but I haven't done physics as a VCE subject. Or is it better to pick something that at least sort of compliments my main subjects? Also I was looking at the subjects under Arts and I was wondering if I should take the law/justice minor since I want to do the JD afterwards - will that give me a headstart? Or should I just stick to my interests (philosophy/psych)? I'm probably thinking too far ahead haha.
ALSO, is anyone doing first year philosophy?! Kind of intimidated to go to lectures with older people <_>

Hi there! I don't know whether you're still considering this, but there is a pretty good subject for first years in science called Intro to Life, Earth and Universe (I think the subject code is MULT10011). This covers a lot of astronomy as well as fundamental earth sciences and biology. As the title suggests, the focus of these topics is to understand how the universe and solar system formed, and how life was able to develop on Earth. It also looks at the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe - and that's where astrophysics comes in.
It can be taken as breadth. In semester one last year it was a very popular option for arts students.
If you want to go further with astrophysics I suggest you also take Physics 1: Fundamentals and see where that takes you. Astrophysics is a third year subject and requires at least one physics subject at level 2, which in turn require level one physics knowledge.

We'll see if you still say that after you suffer through it :P

Anatomy and Physiology are both very popular because people see them as med related. Defence/disease and micro/immuno are also both rather popular. Micro and Immuno is well taught and pretty fun at the same time (I did it)

choosing subjects is a nightmare!

I was happy with MBB1,bio,chem 1 and Spanish. but as I want to do GAMSAT,I became concern about my choices!:(

should I take physic instead of MBB1? I was good at it but I didn't like it at all! Is it possible that I become ready for this exam just by reading books by myself?

Answered this question a while back.  Hope this helps!

My Personal Opinion: "Don't select your uni subjects with the intention of thinking that it will assist you in GAMSAT at the expense of you not enjoying them and as a result, pulling down your GPA". Your GPA is just as important as your GAMSAT, as each make up 1/3rd of your overall ranking for medicine (with the other third being the interview). I'm speaking from experience because I chose to do first year physics and essay writing subjects thinking that they would help me with GAMSAT but they just pulled down my GPA because I didn't enjoy them. Just study for GAMSAT separately, you have time (if you want to get into medicine that badly, you will make the time)! You have three(*) opportunities to sit your GAMSAT during your undergraduate degree.

That's where you search for them. Not all Faculties/Subject release sample papers at all.

Hey, is ACCT10001 Accounting Reports and Analysis?
The course material has changed a bit, it's mostly theory based now and all the practical stuff such as consolidations, bank reconciliations, general entries, ledger accounts, balance sheet and etc...are moved to ACCT10002 now called Introductory to Financial Accounting. It's used to be called Accounting Transactions and Analysis.
So the exams may be totally different or you could search under those names.
However, I did save some of the exams. If you are really interested. You can inbox me :)
