I'm almost decided on Calculus 1 and Chemistry 1 and I'm doing a DipLang (German), but I can't pick which biology subject to take - there are too many and I doubt the advice day is going to clear this up, because I've read about pretty much all of them. So, any recommendations?

Definitely recommend BIOL10004 and BIOL10005; they open a lot of doors for second year subjects.

And it's generally the biology subject that everybody picks unless you have some specific reasons why not to.

There's only 2 major first year biology subjects isn't there?

Everyone refers to them as "Bio 1" and "Bio 2"

The only other one was Flora and Fauna, and not too many people picked that.

Props for taking German, though, LeviLamp. Have you been accepted into UoM and applied for the course yet? Enrolments for DipLang close before the end of the month.

He probably wants to cross-credit though.

Good point.

You've got two years to apply for a Diploma of Languages. You can start studying German in Breadth subjects now, and then at the end of two years, decide that you want them credited towards another official credential; a diploma. You then just have to do a few extra diploma subjects and you get the degree.

What's important about what I just said is that you don't have to apply for it now - you can do it in two years and get the diploma attached to the degree.

I have ANOTHER question, this time regarding Academic Advice Day.
I'm really busy over the next few days, and so taking time out to go to the day may be inconvenient. However, I've been doing research into the available subjects for the past few months and I'm fairly sure I know which subjects I want to do (Chemistry 1, Calculus 1, Biology of Cells and Organisms and German 1), so will it negatively impact me if I miss the AAD and  should I either try and get there on the 23rd or attend the second one on the 22nd of Feb, or is missing the day fine?

No negative impact whatsoever. The whole purpose of the day is just to have a bit of a taste of all the subjects that you are interested in and from that select them. The University is open every single day. You don't need to specifically attend the AAD to get your issues resolved.

I wouldn't waste time going to the AAD. It was pretty worthless, just do your research in the handbook, and if there's any specific questions, ask em here :)

In terms of campus life and activities are there any days of the week on which you'd recommend a first year definitely schedule classes?

Well the UMSU BBQs (free for all) are always accompanied by bands on the Mondays and Tuesdays. The bands/performers on the Mondays are pretty average, but the ones on Tuesday are usually kind of well known bands like Evermore, The Medics, The Bamboos, Snakadaktal, Washington, Ash Grunwald, The Rubens etc. They go from 1-2pm usually so if you like live acts then definitely have classes on Tuesdays and keep that slot free

Also last year, for the first term at least, there was a pub crawl/night every Wednesday, but after the 3rd one not many people showed up at all unless it a particularly hyped up one. Other than that there's something called Kegs 'n' Sun that's on the last Friday before each of the 4 breaks of the year which can be a bit of fun.

But yeah other than that there really isn't anything regular or concrete, it could be any day of the week really - but the major stuff like the Balls, after exams parties and boat parties are all obviously at night, there really isn't too much on in the day unless it's Prosh wekk

You'd probably have all/most of your lectures on Mondays and Wednesdays (and Fridays if you're studying Science), so I'd say put some pracs/tutorials on Tuesday for the bands. The only thing you'd miss on Thursdays would be the BBQ run by the Science and/or Arts societies, which is just a free feed and a chance to hang out with friends.

But yeah, apart from the bands I can't really think of anything else that would be all that noteworthy.
