Does anyone know what marks i would need in Fundamentals of Chemistry CHEM10007 to skip doing Chem 1 in Sem 2 and do Chem 2 in Sem 2 instead? Would really like to avoid summer study.

It's more a case of doing well in (h1ing) the exam. For the mid semester tests during the unit I often received 66% but the last one I got >80%. For the pracs I pretty much got 70% every time.

Oh damn! Was it hard work?
I think every subject in uni requires hard work or some effort so chem wasn't really an exception. I wrote a review on fundamentals of chemistry in the subject reviews & ratings section from the UoM board on how to maximise your marks. To cut it short though as long as you use the practice materials available: Mid sem test reviews (they give you feedback for these), Textbook questions, lecture questions, tutorials, ILTs, feedback problems on chemcal and all the practice exams you'll be fine :) You will probably have to rote learn some stuff on the side as well

woot i still have a chance to get a H1 in chem2!

Do exams have a higher weighting or something?

I got a question. I've been hearing people saying that doing PHYS20008 + PHYS20009 in the same semester = Chillax.

Question here is, how easier would my life be with a combination of PHYS20008 + ZOOL20006 in the same semester instead?

Probably a strange question to ask so early, but for a Chemistry major doing German 3 and 4 as breadth in second year, APPROXIMATELY how many contact hours would you expect per week compared to the 21 I have for first year?

You can look it up yourself in the handbook.

German 3 - 4 contact hours
Chemistry: Reactions and Synthesis - 3x 1hr lectures per week, 1x 1hr tute per week + 3 non-compulsory enrichment hours throughout semester
Subject 3
Subject 4

Total = 8 hours + two other subjects

Semester 2 is however much more fucked for Chemistry majors as there's two Chemistry subjects - one is the practical component by itself, and the other is the lecture component
Practical Chemistry 2 - 21x 3hr practicals across 12 weeks. 71 hours for the semester. That averages out to 5.91 hrs of prac per week.
Chemistry: Structure and Properties - 3x 1hr lectures per week, 1x 1hr tute per week + 3 non-compulsory enrichment hours throughout semester
German 4 - 4 contact hours
Subject 4

Total = 13.91 contact hours (on average)

Much less than first year, but still, 6 hours of prac a week is fucked. You've got that to look forward to. I'll let you know how I find it. Hit me up for any Chemistry 1/2 problems :)

Jesus Coordination chemistry is so cruel.

We do questions about triamminechloroethylenediaminechromium(III) Iodide and Chlorobis(ethylenediamine)thiocyanatocobalt(III) chloride.

FML! Yes they are actually spelt like that with no spaces.

The textbook goes through nomenclature of that section really well. If I were you i'd create a list of the steps you have to go through in naming them and use that list when doing questions, soon enough you will remember it :) There are heaps of questions from the tutorial book, lecture notes, chemcal, textbook

Thanks :) i know the basics of naming, i just need to memorise the specific terms you have to use.

It's hard because some of the words are so peculiar :/

Hey guys,

With biomed, when can we buy second hand books? When's the best time to buy textbooks? Is it too late to buy them after uni starts? thanks :)

Buy textbooks after uni starts, if at all. I got through first year having only bought the Chem textbooks, which I planned to major in regardless.

Our lecturer for Chemistry for Biomedicine went through it but thought it was unnecessary for us to remember it for this course.

When can we buy them? At any time.
When's the best time to buy textbooks? Depends on your knowledge of the subject or way of studying. If prereading is a must for you, then maybe grabbing the textbooks at the start of the year might be a good idea. You can borrow the books from the library if you want to see how useful they are before making an investment. But personally, for Chemistry for Biomedicine, the textbook is optional, because the lectures and tutorials are excellent. (I haven't read a page of Zumdahl before though). If you haven't done VCE Biology, then reading a VCE textbook will often be more easier to understand for the basics. With regard to the more intricate details, the lectures and tutorials will cover that, and once again the library can be used on those occasions when you need the book.
Statistics - the book is optional, but I haven't ever read a page of in it, nor purchased it.
Mathematics - new to the course, so I don't know too much about this subject but it should be similar to the above.
Physics - you'll get lots of resources. I don't know if anyone managed to keep up or go through all the resources they provided let alone do all the recommended questions from the textbook (I think you got a bunch after some lectures).

You can refer to the subject reviews page, where people have recommended whether or not textbooks are necessary for each subject, as they may be co-ordinated by people with different ways of running the course etc. so would differ in whether or not the textbook is necessary.

If you must purchase any textbook for first year biomedicine cores, then there is nothing wrong with waiting it a bit out and seeing which subjects require attention due to them being your weakness etc. But often, I found that the lecturers/tutorials/practicals were good at what they did at conveying their material, so there wasn't really a need for a textbook. Some subjects also supply textbook summaries (thank you).

Apparently 30% of students fail chemistry 2? Does anyone want to confirm or deny this?

Also, I'm sitting on an avg of ~79 (with 7 subjects) so far, how good is that exactly? Where exactly would I be sitting in my cohort with a score like that?
