@simpak: Yeah I was still kind of ticked off at the ridiculous marking of the assignments when I made my post so coming home to incorrect workbook questions was the straw that broke the angry camel's back :s
I know question errors are always going to happen (though in questions that are recycled for 20 years (one of the questions in the book is a cladogram that Ros Green says has been there for almost two decades) you would expect the mistakes to be fixed) but I feel like my complaints about the mid-semester format and assignment marking as well as the tutor/demonstrator marking discrepancies (which can be ENORMOUS and also depend on what types of things each demonstrator cracks down on e.g. Michelle Lupton doesn't care too much about neatness while Ros told us all she's incredibly hung up on tidiness) are definitely valid and not just me being mad at people. I don't hate the subject or anything, I thought Dawn's lectures were OK/she's really nice and helpful when you ask and I love Rick and Theresa and they do try and provide lots of resources for us.
Also, with the Arabidopsis thing, I had to use the Web of Science only and use a certain set of search terms, and Ros told us the abstract needed to contain all the relevant terms (genes, cancer and the plant name) and so I could only find one (I think I found a second later on after getting my article) that wasn't outdated and also had a descriptive title and abstract, even though a Google search came up with heaps. I don't ever have problems finding research papers/journals etc. normally (for Flora/Fauna I've been able to track down enormous numbers of them for use as extra references since I have a habit of giving overly detailed responses) but thanks for all your advice, I really appreciate it and feel bad for getting grumpy in the thread now  :'(

@t-rav: I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the difference in assessment and marking confusing o_o

@El2012: The exam's worth 50%, the assignment and MST were both worth 10.

Now to stop hogging the thread and being a self-centred whingebag >_>

But seriously, don't give up yet! The minute you stop to think about it too long is when it all falls apart. Swotvac will be hell but it'll allow you to save things :P

And plus, this was so you could do the semester abroad right? Just keep using that as motivation! :P

I'm using external sources to get the information I need :) I think a bit of wordplay and inference is acceptable, though.
Speaking of citation, though, I can't find enough reference-able material for the question on the advantages of early birth (6b?)

(Also here's my answer for 6a if it helps any)
6a
Newborn marsupials, while generally at an early stage of development due to the exceedingly short gestation period of their mothers, have comparatively well-developed forelimbs, in contrast to other parts of their anatomy, such as their permanently shut eyes and primordial hind limbs (Ladiges, Gleadow & Handasyde 2013). The well-developed forelimbs and claws, in combination with a sturdy chest and heart, are significant as they allow the largely helpless neonate to pull itself up from the vaginal opening to the pouch and teat of its mother with negligible assistance (the mother may lick the pathway to her pouch to reduce the desiccation and improve the grip of her young, but gives no further help to her offspring) (Ladiges, Gleadow & Handasyde 2013; Nature of Australia: A separate creation 1988).
Yeah that's basically what I said, but in our workbook is doesn't actually mention forelimbs right? It's kind of implied because they have to crawl to the mothers pouch?? :/

Briefly going back to the discussion of first-year Biology tutors...

Does anyone else think Ros looks a little like Anna Wintour?

LeviLamp;
I hadn't found any issues with BIOL10005 thus far.  How did you find out so much about your assignment grades and the average grade as a cohort?  It was a weird assignment and I'd be interested to get my mark, everyone said the BIOL10004 'Assignment' (Lab Report) was marked really harshly but I got 10/10 and I'm pretty sure I did it in like an hour before it was due.
My biggest issue is actually with Dawn's lecture slides, they are really crap as a standalone resource, not trying to cop out on taking my own notes etc (I do) but it's still sometimes nice to be able to scan the lecture notes again for some extra visual references or whatever.  But her powerpoints are terrible!

Michelle told us about the assignment and then I compared mine with friends who had different tutors to see where I made mistakes.
And that assignment WAS marked harshly, but it depends on who marked it.
I don't have any really major issues outside of the inconsistency of marking (which seems to have been ridiculous this time around and is bad even within single practicals) and the poor/misleading instruction on the eFly assignment (which seems to have led to lots of people losing marks).
I don't like Dawn's slides at all :P Have to listen to her lectures + use a combination of in-lecture typed notes and slides to get my own notes to make sense ;(

Levilamp, just received results today :/
Indeed it was marked very harshly, got marks off for the journal question since i didnt mention that it was "peer reviewed" and got marks off for the drosophila question even though it was ticked...
I was the only one on my table who got the result back since no one on my table turned up, but a girl across the table started crying when she got her results :ss
