anyone know when registration for summer semester opens?
It's already open! You just need to go to your study plan, select 'Summer Semester' as the enrolment period for which ever subject it is, and then hit enrol!

It's not like 4 subjects a semester is a lot of work. Australia gets it easy! In other countries you have to do 8 subjects a semester lol

Haha I know you're trying to make a point, but from my experience at Penn where students are allowed to take >4 subjects a semester and hearing from others that can 'overload' by our standards, Australia definitely doesn't get it easy with four subjects.  The expectations are much higher at Aus unis...or at least our uni.
My friend  did like six subjects a semester in Sweden on exchange and you do them one by one...like you never do any concurrently you just do intensives.  I think that would be really weird!

That said I wouldn't study over summer really.
This year I've had the pleasure of not having a break since semester 1 due to UROP and it's pretty much taken its toll on me.
Usually after exams I go sleep for like three days (legit) but this time I have to move house and go back to WEHI the Monday after my last exam Thursday next week ):
Feel like I never get a break!
And then I'm probably starting Honours early.

THE MESSAGE IS: undergraduates, treasure summer while it is exists.
By like end third year and onwards summer no longer exists even if you do continue studying.

Okay, having a massive confidence ebb.
Would you think that working consistently throughout semester (about 3-4 hours a day outside of classes, keeping up with exercises, watching all lectures, doing all assignments) plus 10-12 hours a day for every day of swotvac + exam block should yield H1s right?
Or is that kind of lazy compared to most H1 students?
Or am I just daft?
I honestly will be lucky to get a H1 in ONE of my subjects this semester and it's ticking me off... losing motivation.

Yes that's a normal amount of work don't use my insane study habits as a goal.

I thought it was pretty high but then again I'm mostly exposed to the abilities of my freak boyfriend who doesn't do any study (just assignments) and then puts in like 2 x 8hr days of study for each subject during swotvac and gets 90%.

i still get about a 2 month  break which is plenty to me. THe way you describe your year lol makes me want to do a summer subject even more.... having 2 less subjects to do in 3rd year (plan on taking one mid sem next year) would relieve some stress at least.

It's already open! You just need to go to your study plan, select 'Summer Semester' as the enrolment period for which ever subject it is, and then hit enrol!
sorry i meant class registration, you know timetable and stuff
Yea it's fine if you don't mind.

I just went through chemistry 2 over the summer and it was very painful lol. I had to revise so much for the exam and then semester 1 started like 1 week after :(

i thought it starts like less than a week after new years day..

I did chem for Biomed so i know how painful that can be. But i was planning on doing finance 1 which i have been told isnt a heavy workload subject and is not particularly difficult

lol so true. I don't think Russ has had a proper holiday in years!

In some way, i guess not taking summer subjects might help you cope with the workload of postgrad courses.

Holy! That's more than enough to get H1.

I thoroughly enjoyed those 4 days off, I don't know what you're talking about :(

This is more work than I do and it makes me wonder whether or not you're optimizing your study, if you're still worrying about getting H1s with that sort of effort. How efficient is your study?

I feel kind of the same as nicola - I did way more proactive, consistent work this semester (not an (amazing) consistent 3-4 hours per day, but probably about the same number of hours by the end of it) but feel like both the Chem 2 and German 2 exams shafted all that just by being disproportionately hard (though I did manage to answer everything), like with the two calc subjects this year. It's really depressing to have pure bad luck undermine all your hard work :<<<
I'm sure most people here must have felt the same about this in the past/are feeling like that now.

Hey Russ
I will admit that because it's been almost 10 years since I did any form of study, I was floundering a bit at the start of this year, and even though I was doing only 2 subjects (full time work still) I still got two H1s.
But this semester my study habits are much better and whilst I do lose focus sometimes (after about 7 hours I start getting noticeably less productive) it's definitely not dire.
I shouldn't jump the gun - obviously haven't even sat most of my exams - but I need 90% in biol, 80% in Linear Algebra and 80% in ESD for a H1 and I just don't think I'm feeling confident enough for those grades. Anyway look sorry for the self centred rant - we're all in the same boat really - most people aren't on AN unless they are generally high achievers with a substantial care factor. I have always just basically topped everything I've ever done, but now I'm actually doing something kind of hard, I should wake up and smell the roses!

I would probably also get less productive after 7 hours -.-
I don't think it's necessarily a matter of not being confident, that's a lot of work and H1s are achievable with that effort. If you've not studied for 10 years then I'd suspect it might be study patterns not being right for assessment based learning

Yes. I do hope to improve them over time. They have improved a LOT this year, I couldn't sit down for more than 3 hours a day when I started this year. I was impressed by 3 hours!!!

I also lost some stupid marks for Biology which is probably the only reason I won't be able to scrape that grade for that subject, so that one is largely my own fault.

I dunno if my study counts as efficient or anything. During the semester I usually put in 3-5 hours on weekdays if classes ended before 2, and if I finished past like 5, I'd get home pretty late so I'd only put in 0-2 hours. This SWOTVAC I've probably clocked up between 9-12 hours each day, mainly because I was doing heaps of questions for physics and bio, with breaks in between. The hours are a bit excessive. But I guess it's what you do in those hours which really counts

I do think I'm going to grow white hairs early now lol
