does anyone know how the community access program work (to do an extra subject)? do you pay upfront or is it just added to your HECS?

I believe you have to pay full-fee, but you can do it through FEE-HELP. This is really the same thing as HECS, but you have a limit of 85k.

And no you don't, I'm just pretty hopeless! I only ever went to school with two people with an Asian background, so I've never really encountered any Asian surnames!

BALLERINA THE PERSON DAPHANE NG ASKED ABOUT COMPARATIVE NUTRITION AND DIGESTION SAID BAD THINGS ABOUT IT SO NOW YOU HAVE TO DO ZOOL20006 INSTEAD (y)

FLORA OF VICTORIA FIELDTRIP BUDDIESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS~!

I don't mean to be nitpicky or anything but you guys should aim to distinguish between the different kinds of GPA, especially on a CV.  Removing 25 points definitely occurs when you calculate the SGPA but that scale is out of 100%, not 7.0.  So you both have a higher SGPA than flat out GPA but it still wouldn't be '7.0' because if we used that scale no subjects are allowed to be left out of the calculation and presumably you're both wanting to remove a subject that's not a H1.  I don't think that 7.0 GPAs apply to either of you though anyway because neither of you want to do a postgrad course that uses it!

Saying stuff like 'I have a 7.0 GPA because two of my subjects don't count' can also confuse people who come in here and do plan on using a 7.0 GPA scale when they're applying for a grad course too!  Like potentially MelonBar up there...to answer your q MelonBar two subjects will be removed from your SGPA but if you want to apply to Med, Dent or some other postgrad course that isn't Honours no subjects will be removed.  Also, SGPA doesn't weight years differently the only precedence for third year is that no low scoring subjects can be removed from the final calculation if they were taken at Level 3.  This is in contrast to the Med GPA where the third year is weighted three times as much as the first.  They're completely separate calculations and Ballerina quoted something from the SGPA policy.

I use my SGPA on my CV because I have only applied for things (jobs, Honours) that use the same SGPA in their calculations.  But yes, you should give a total average if you're applying for something that doesn't use that scale as Hancock suggested!

It can be a bit confusing!  I'll draw your attention to:

"passed at least 62.5 points of subjects at the designated subject year level of the relevant course
passed at least 100, 200 or 300 points in total in the course for consideration at first, second or third year respectively"

So because you did 87.5 points of Level 1 and 12.5 of Level 3 you end up with 100 points overall and >62.5 points at Level 1.  Therefore you are eligible.  It just means you must have done 8 subjects by the time the level 1 list happens, 16 by the time the level 2 list happens etc.  Only 62.5 required at each year level so it doesn't matter that you haven't done 100 points of Level 1 :)

ARGHHGHGHHGHHGHGHGHG!!!

Whaaat, references plz. I would love clarification as there tends to be a great deal of confusion with these calculations due to the absence of a universal system. The Science Student Centre stated differently to what you wrote (although honestly, they don't give the most accurate advice). It also seems SGPA and GPA are equated as the same thing on this page, despite the definitions at the bottom.

http://policy.unimelb.edu.au/MPF1053

'Grade Point Average Calculation Procedure (MPF1053)'

Furthermore, other pages link to the above SGPA page in regard to GPAs, such as

http://ask.unimelb.edu.au/app/answers/detail/a_id/5029

It goes on to refer to SGPAs and GPAs interchangeably, showing the procedure of calculating the SGPA while discussing GPAs.

And  'These procedures apply to all graduate and Bachelor Honours programs requiring a Grade Point Average (GPA) as part of their selection criteria, except where faculties and graduate schools have an alternative Board approved method of calculating a GPA published in the relevant Resolution on Selection.'

I am seeking that postgrad course; the scale is indeed applicable to me.

Aaaand I have seen the SGPA depicted using different scales, both out of 100 and 7.0. It's a bit frustrating that there's a lack of consensus. It would be nice if there transparent writing on it somewhere.

It is accurate however that SGPA doesn't weight years differently, I was happy when I saw that a fortnight ago. My first year results are probably my peak >:c

My timetable for summer semester goes something like this

wed - lecture 1 10am, tutorial 1 2pm
fri - lecture 2 10am, tutorial 2, 2pm

on the lms under tutorials it says

"Tutorial 01 : Friday 10th January 2014"

does this mean there are no tutes this wednesday?

Has anyone taken or is taking Flora in Victoria? I am going to show up to the goddamn coordinator's house and ask for lecture material, because it's an intensive class over 2 weeks and the exam is a week after the lectures. IF YOU STILL HAVE ANY CONTENT FROM THAT CLASS E.G. LECTURES OR PRACTICE EXAM PAPERS I WILL BUY YOU ALL THE COFFEE IN UNION HOUSE (or lunch accompanied by dessert and an extra large coffee with syrup).

7.0 comes from this: http://www.gemsas.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/GEMSAS-GPA-guidelines.pdf
In this GPA, first year is weighted x1, second year x2, third year x3.  No subjects are removed from the calculation.
GEMSAS GPA = 7.0 GPA.

SGPA comes from this: http://policy.unimelb.edu.au/MPF1053
In this GPA, all years are weighted the same but the number of points a subject is worth is taken into consideration for weighting.  The two lowest subjects from either second or first year are removed.  Alternatively if you are a Biomedicine student and you did poorly in a second year subject worth 25 points that single subject can be removed.
I will quickly address the term "weighted" from this policy, even though I know you're not confused by that part as some people get confused and it might be beneficial for them: Weighting refers to 12.5 or 25 or even 50 points (as some subjects are) and the relevance of that.  So, a second year Biomedicine subject worth 25 points counts twice as much as a 12.5 point subject in a Biomedicine degree.  But second year subjects are not weighted more heavily than first year subjects in terms of SGPA.  Only for a GEMSAS GPA calculation (and potentially other degrees, I'm not sure what other GPAs courses use, but let's just consider SGPA vs GEMSAS GPA for now).
SGPA = GPA /100.00

SGPA and GPA can mean the same thing...I wasn't trying to distinguish between GPA and SGPA I was distinguishing between GEMSAS GPA (/7.0) and SGPA (/100) that's all.  Sorry if that wasn't quite clear! :)

And when I said something about a GPA not being relevant to what you want to do I was referring to the fact that you've stated you're not interested in Medicine so the only thing that applies is the SGPA out of 100 presuming you are applying for Honours.  I'm not entirely sure what postgrad course you want to do though so I could be wrong about it using an SGPA at all.

SGPA is definitely a calculation out of 100.  It might not say it in the policy but it is a calculation down to 2 decimal points.  I know, because it was used in the calculation of my own GPA for Honours and for awards and for whatever else we are discussing.  If I apply to Honours the GPA they will get is 94.8x (I can't remember the last point) and if I apply to Medicine next year and I only get H1s in Honours my GPA will be stated as 7.0.  That's because in this degree I never got anything below a H1, though I did in a previous degree that is removed from the calculations as of next year.  So it's near impossible to have a perfect SGPA (I wonder if anyone in the history of time has ever done it!) but it's very possible to have a perfect GEMSAS GPA for health postgrad course applications.  Does the anecdote help? 3:

What did the Science Student Centre say that contradicts what I said?  It's definitely a 4 digit number within the Micro/Immuno department for Honours.  I know for PhD it no longer includes your second and first year marks but your third year scores and Honours scores are considered.

------

Where do you guys go on your fieldtrip?  Dandenongs or something?  It sounds nice!
