I didn't know people take inter-university jokes/banter seriously?

To liken University rivalry to racism is a bit much and probably a little offensive to people who have to endure racism to be honest
It's an stretch to say that this was what Hancock was doing - as he's said the comparison wasn't to racism itself but rather how people try to normalise/justify their potentially offensive statement by saying that they're just a joke, hence suggesting they're not accountable for what they say, and he used racism as an example of a type of 'potentially offensive statement'.

On a moderator note: Monash people, if you're going to come on here and make jokes that's fine but be sensitive and respectful in the way that you do it. Obvious trolling won't be accepted and I'll ban people if I need to, I don't care who it is. Not that anyone was close to getting banned this, but take this as a warning for the future.

Everyone else again just remember to please be respectful - remember that you're talking to real people here. We want to have fun on this board and be friends but we also don't want this to be a place that people come to only to be belittled or hurt. This conversation hasn't been bad, but I'm preempting it taking a turn for the worse that obviously we'd like to avoid.

As you were.

I don't usually call people out on the internet but I'm going to say this for clarification - Instead of trying to be politically correct, maybe you should take my argument for what it was instead of extrapolating your worst-case perception of it. See Charmanderp's post for clarification people, he said it better than I ever could.

I'm going to leave this topic as it is, any reply pertaining to this will be ignored. The final thing I will say is that universities in Australia are about as homogenous as water: Monash, Melbourne, RMIT, Swinburne, La Trobe, they are all just places to mature as a person and gain a degree that will hopefully be useful in your life. Peace out AN, be back soon.

This is on a bit of a tangent, but sort of related I guess.

Is it just me or are a lot university students kind of.. immature? I was scrolling through the Unimelb 'confessions' facebook page and literally every single comment is some really sarcastic and pithy statement trying to belittle the person who made a post. It's kind of puerile. There just seems to be a whole lot of rude, arrogant and in your face type people. Especially the 'fuck Tony Abbott' protesters outside Baillieu - and I don't even like Tony Abbott. It's just kind of redundant. And the whole vilification of 'jaffys', not that I really care. It just shows how people kind of construct these sort of arbitrary hierarchies in their head - I guess I assumed that 20-21 year olds would be over that sort of thing.

Biomed's not much better. Don't get me wrong - I've met heaps of nice people. But if anything it's even more cliquey than high school - the social dynamic kind of feels like Year 9 all over again.

Just interested in what you guys think, I guess.

What you have to remember is that these are people that are only a few years out of high school :P People don't mature as quickly or arbitrarily as one might think just because they've left high school, and in fact I think the freedom of university as opposed to the strictures and pressure of high school can actually have a reverse effect.

That being said you also can't judge people to be immature based on a few actions - we're all young people and will act accordingly - just because people say things on social media or make childish jokes it doesn't mean they themselves as people can't be serious when they need to be. The political types obvious will act that way when they need to because it's what the role necessitates, but plenty of them are perfectly reasonable people otherwise.

Except Socialist Alternative. Not even once.

I don't understand what was so insensitive about thu thu's post. Can you explain please? Half the shit that goes on in this UoM chat thread borders on trolling/shitposting, and yet you get insulted over what was clearly meant as a joke...

Hahaha. Yeah, I guess you're right. I wasn't expecting it to get better, but I didn't expect it to get worse. I like your point about freedom though. I guess a fresh start at university can exacerbate the need to establish yourself on a social hierarchy - whereas at school it was always so predefined.

I'm sort of making myself sound like a killjoy here - I'm not, I just thought there was quite a bit of petty bullshit.

My sincerest apologies everyone. I thought I'd partake in a bit of friendly university rivalry/banter but I guess some people took me overly serious and got offended. Maybe it was wrong of me to make that joke by implying University of Melbourne had never done anything to help the youth of today with their education. Obviously University of Melbourne has several things such as Access Melbourne and the Kwong Lee Dow scholarship and many more things.

I just hope that you can find it in your fragile hearts to forgive me for my transgression and I promise to never make an offhanded joke about University of Melbourne again.

You shouldn't have to apologise.
So your joke wasn't taken in the spirit it was intended.

Well tough!

Nobody who is familiar with either uni could reasonably read malice into it, so getting annoyed by it is a bit of an over reaction.
(I've attended both unis and the people are nice at both - though maybe a little more self-consciously fashionable at UoM ;) )

Although I do have respect that they're so passionate and willing to put in so much effort to try and do something

Mate, most of these mob are just there because they want to cause trouble. I'm assuming these people are the Socialist Alternative, because they're widely regarded as the biggest numpties on campus (both UoM, Monash and other universities). Not only are they deliberately disruptive and intimidating, some of them also (ironically) exhibit kinda racist tendencies and alienate real supporters of good causes that they hijack to spread their radicalist agenda.

tl;dr I'm ranting, they're a buncha dicks, ignore them like everyone else haha

Are you saying that my signature is attention seeking :'( I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME

My mate had the balls to tell one of these radicals that he liked Tony Abbott & so did the majority of Australia seeing as he's the current PM... That shut one of them up lol

Seriously though, I'm on the South Lawn lining up for my $2 souvlaki and you just hear all of these demonstrators yelling stuff through their megaphones... not 1 person is paying attention... Although I do have respect that they're so passionate and willing to put in so much effort to try and do something
The ones selling the "Fuck Tony Abbott T-Shirts" are 3edgy5me(Maybe they don't sell them at unimelb?). Seriously it pisses me off and I'm all for free speech and we get it you hate Tony Abbott a lot of us do but if I see someone wearing those shirts I just want to punch them in the face.
