The worst thing is when the Socialist Alternative put out petitions to sign that are actually good to sign, but if you try to sign the petition and run away you're trapped with complaints and attacks on everyone in the world and I JUST WANTED TO SIGN A REFUGEE RIGHTS PETITION STOP TOUCHING MY SHOULDER SO SENSUALLY.

Are you saying that my signature is attention seeking :'( I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME

I ain't hating on the thu thu train, yo

The ones selling the "Fuck Tony Abbott T-Shirts" are 3edgy5me(Maybe they don't sell them at unimelb?). Seriously it pisses me off and I'm all for free speech and we get it you hate Tony Abbott a lot of us do but if I see someone wearing those shirts I just want to punch them in the face.

It's just childish pseudopolitics from people to whom the phrase "3edgy5me" fits perfectly. Very few of these people can actually articulate why they don't like the current government, because they don't have any knowledge of said government or the political climate of the day. Even worse - like I said above - is they render any legitimate criticism of the government by moderate, rational people as stupid by association, which is incredibly dangerous to the underlying principles of democracy.

But then again, let's not forget what some of these people think about democracy:

I preferentially dislike when my lecturers (one for statistics, another for physio, and the other teaches genetics; none of them (are paid to) lecture politics) involve left-wing messages in their sermons, directly mocking Abbott, religion, right-wing ideologies. This is in between the student speeches they allow to eat up time in the classes I pay for. It's not classy and it's not fair on the left-wing supporters who base their arguments on intellectual discourse, rationality and empiricism. Left-wing beliefs are about championing for the underdog, and right-wing supporters are quite a minority on campus.

This is also what I find deeply offensive

Two observations:

People who have a joke about universities and a bit of a tease about it aren't necessarily immature. It seems a bit over the top to suggest some ribbing is immature, it's completely mature.

It hardly seems a bad thing to have some university rivalry and the jokes that go with it. I'd argue that it's a good thing, because it helps people to feel like they belong to something and is generally quite funny. It'd be just weird going to Cambridge or Oxford in the UK and not getting a few shots in on the other, so I cannot understand why in Australia, where being a dick head like that is practically wound into our culture, that everyone gets so upset because someone said UniMelb is snobby, or that Monash is full of people who want to go to Melbourne. Relax guys.

I don't understand what was so insensitive about thu thu's post. Can you explain please? Half the shit that goes on in this UoM chat thread borders on trolling/shitposting, and yet you get insulted over what was clearly meant as a joke...

edit: the "you" isn't directed at you personally charmanderp
I know you've said it wasn't directed at me but I'll give my opinion anyway :P I personally have no qualms whatsoever with what thu said and I found it pretty amusing myself, but what I don't want to see is the 'rivalry' boil over to the point that people are at each others throats with petty arguments and personal attacks. What you (not directed at you Nina) have to understand is that when you go onto another university's board and make a slight at that university people are going to take it seriously. Let's face it, we're all pretty proud of the institution we go to which leads to a bit of hubris on everyone's part.

I would disagree with you on the point that this thread consists of regular 'shitposting' - I'd say for the most part (90% at least) it's pretty constructive discussion and obviously when something disrupts that it's going to be taken seriously out of context which is probably why there was such a strong response to thu's post, because out of context it does genuinely look like he was trying to insult the UoM cohort, even if we know that that wasn't his intention.

It's expensive to be SO FUCKING EDGY AND AGAINST THE SYSTEM MAN.

So, my girlfriend and I were walking past them today, and they were plugging some conference that they had coming up. So my girlfriend stopped and asked them how much it cost.

Girlfriend: Does it cost anything?
Marxist: it's 50 dollars
Girlfriend: for Marxism?
Me: aren't you lot supposed to be anti-capitalist?
Marxist: hgashgdsngsd fuck you cu-
