I have yet to bump into someone who did the degree because of prestige.

Don't mean to be a buzz killer but I don't think many people who went into a course for prestige would be very open with it.
BSc (2015), MD1 (2016)
Tutoring in 2016: http://www.tutorfinder.com.au/tutors/detail.php?TutorID=78301
Chuck a PM if interested :)

Available for tutoring on the summer holidays for university subjects or VCe.
Also tutoring for the Melbourne uni MMIs (medical/physiotherapy interviews)

Please don't PM me for lecture slides or recordings. I don't have them anymore.

It would also beg the question of motivation - prestige as a major reason to pick a course isn't going to worth anything until you finish 3+ years later. At the point you decide which course to take on, effectively it would be 4+ years. That's a huge delay in remaining vigilant throughout the course for relatively the same objective which both courses offer.

Nonetheless if you're already set on life sciences and had the choice to get into either, BBiomed would be more efficient administrative-wise.

With prestige to sprinkle on that cake at the end.

And then I thought about hairdressing college, but I missed the application deadline by two days.

The fact that everyone asks "but do they prefer Biomed to Science when you apply for med?" about 1 billion times is probably a strong indicator that prestige is on people's minds.

2016-20: MD, UniMelb

After ugrad if you cont with study nobody knows what anyone did.  Like for eg my own supervisors don't know what degree I did in real undergrad...and I'm technically still in the process of completing that degree, with their help!  People just don't care because you got basically an identical education.  They care about the subjects you took (in third year only) more than your degree if you're looking to do something in postgrad that isn't medicine.

The only time I've thought 'choosing Science was potentially a bad idea' was when I was filling out my GEMSAS app as vea alluded to.
It did mean I just removed Monash from my application entirely though. And let's face it, nobody really wants to go there, so it wasn't a major loss at all.  Probably just dodgin' bullets over here.
In all seriousness, if I were giving advice to someone who wants to do med as to whether they should do Biomed or Sci these days I would probably recommend Biomed because of the Monash thing and we live in Victoria.  But if they wanted more degree freedom, I would still recommend Sci, even though it would complicate their Med applications.  Unless you wanna put Monash #1 (lel) I think degree freedom might be more important to some people, as it was to me.

MCB is Molecular and Cellular Biomedicine, unless I'm horribly mistaken.

It's worth twice as many credit points (12.5*2=25) as the average subject, so you can choose to take one less subject per that semester or any other.

They complain about the subject like it's only worth 12.5 credit points though ♥♥♥

92+ ATAR is beyond me for the Arts course. I'm sorry that people tell me otherwise, but just the robust and competitiveness of VCE is killing me atm. E.g. especially when one studies and doesn't get any reward...

For me personally I think that science is better in 3rd year because there aren't any compulsory subjects which you need to do and science students can choose to complete '2' majors if they want (obviously only being credited for one on trancript but you guys know what i mean!). As for MCB and HSF I feel as though it is more intensive which has good and bad aspects. For MCB knowing 2 subjects worth of content for 2 exams rather than 2x12.5 point subjects makes a huge difference. Keeping up with content is obviously a lot more difficult since the only break we get from content is the weekends etc. But in saying all of that as a criticism it's been the best subject I have done at uni up until now  ;D

I think I can relate to you on this note.

When I did 3/4 English last year, my teacher never seemed to think my pieces were good enough for 10/10. It was frustrating and annoying, because I did everything I possibly could to try and get 10/10. But it never happened, until second semester, where I (finally!) got 10/10 for my context SAC. Brilliant feeling that was  :)

My point is, just keep ploughing on. And if what you're doing at the moment isn't getting you the marks you'd like for a particular subject, then change your strategy. If you keep doing the same things, you're going to get the same marks. So, you might as well try some other method.

You'll have a fresh start in semester 2, and hopefully, you'll use the break to reflect on why your marks aren't to your liking at the moment. Then you can patch up these problems & we'll see you at Melbourne next year!  :)

Dude if you honestly want to get into Melbourne Uni, don't waste time complaining on the forums that you are not getting any rewards. I swear if you just spent your time 100% focused on studies instead of worrying about something that is 6 months away, you will get a much better ATAR score.

You haven't even sat the mid-year exams yet so why the concern?? Even if you don't get in to melbourne uni, you can easily transfer after a year. Or just study at Monash uni since that is a very good university as well.

Repeatedly complaining how the VCE system doesn't suit you won't help you in anyway to reach your goal of getting to melbourne uni.

Also your worst 2 subjects only contribute 10% to your ATAR so you can afford to do crap on them.
:D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D

Okay, I'm sorry that I want to get the best out of myself.

All the same, I'll try not to post on here any more if it is a nuisance. Probably is, thanks for alerting me.

To those who have been adding their subject reviews and ratings over the past few days: Thank you!

b^3 and I curate the index of those threads, and it's a really great thing to see people sharing their views on subjects - this, in my mind, is a very useful resource for AN to have and it's fantastic that people are weighing in and providing useful information in an easy-to-read format.

Thanks again :)
