Hey guys,

I'm actually a bit concerned looking at the unimelb results thread because I've gotten two subjects back so far and my highest was 71... (Still need Physics 1 and Calculus 2 back which surely will be below 70)
And I'm doing first year subjects while most of you guys are doing bloody 2nd, 3rd+ year subjects and getting over 80-90+  ???

I know I didn't put a lot of effort into uni this semester but even if I did, I don't think I'd be getting these 90+ scores lol

And is it worth me paying money to look over my exam? (I got 68 in economics, hoping to bump it up to 70 lol)
Although it sounds weird at first, many people tend to do better at second and third year subjects even though they're 'harder' just because they've managed to learn how to study better, or the subjects themselves pertain more to their interests as the subject topic tends to be less broad.
Also, those 98/99s are absolutely mental and there's no way you should compare yourselves to them. I swear those people must be wizards.

don't worry all lazy first years generally do crap but in second grade you will learn your lesson and the marks will go up :)

This is the case for me. Your marks will increase as your learn how to handle university better. I got the worst marks in first year.
:D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D :D :) ;D

Pay no mind to the results thread. It really is populated by the very best and the very brightest. The student centres at the uni hate it for that reason because people get freaked out!

YES. Even when others said that, I still thought first year would be the easiest because everyone says second and third year is harder. But it was indeed completely the opposite for the reasons aforementioned. I was bored of my prerequisite subjects last year, fascinated by the subjects closer to my interests this year.

Which is why biochem, my prerequisite for next semester, is going to smash me.

I found myself a lot more stressed in first year and I think the frustration negatively impacted on some of my scores...absolutely hated studying for Maths and Physics.

However I found myself a lot more relaxed and interested in my 2nd year subjects, even though they were harder.

I think if you do that it just transfers the same posts into this thread, which was the problem to begin with.

On top of everybody else's wise words (in particular chysim summed it up pretty well), I'd like to add:

- University requires a different way of thinking and learning from high school, and is a totally new environment with new people etc, so it's natural to take a while to get used to it.

- An average mark in the mid 70s is actually pretty good (unless you're hoping to do something like law/medicine/PhD that requires a ridiculous GPA).

- Generally, getting an H1 takes a lot of effort as well as being smart. The university guidelines suggest you should be spending 40 hours a week on average studying. But it what also makes a difference is how you use your study time, and it took me ages to figure out what study techniques worked for me, as well as getting the self-discipline to actually put in the hours.

- As per Ballerina's comment above, I find it much easier to do well in subjects I enjoy.

Didn't even know there was a results thread this year. Thought it was deleted. But yeah I agree.

While I become envious over people's scores sometimes and will never emotionally recover from my 58 for Chemistry 2 :'D, I like appreciating everyone's work over the semester. Some of them sacrificed the gratification of a paycheck because they turned down work shifts, or the gratification of human interaction by rejecting invitations, among other rewarding activities, in exchange for those scores. This is one of the few moments where they receive the gratification of being able to prove that those sacrifices produced a result.

That said, it should always be emphasized in those same threads that any score is a good score as long as it is what you wanted <3 University is always among other competing priorities, and in my opinion (this is subjective), happiness should be one of your first priorities~ I am not going to receive 90 in biochemistry this semester, because I don't like it. I am going to watch cartoons and eat cake and when I post my 53 for biochemistry next semester, I won't be ashamed, because there are other things I'm better at.

You're not your GPA or any other stupid number (cough ATARs cough), and subject results are just a reflection of how much effort you put into the subject. Not you. I hope nobody allows a number (their own or others) to make them feel otherwise. Juggling university with those competing priorities - including health, employment, stress, motivation - means everyone deserves ice cream for passing their subjects. Anything after 50 is just the cherry on top.

Bah, that's not subjective, that's the truth.

Icecream for everyone.
