^ Also, Academic Advice Day does not mean "now". The queues are massive on that day after everyone hears more about the technical details of their course. You'll need to make a special trip in sometime; whether that's before Academic Advice Day or after, that's up to you, but don't wait until O-Week.

What is/happens during O-week if you don't mind me asking?

Just a tip for any first years (or any other year for that matter) who might be thinking they need to ask some questions about your study plan or whatnot: Go in now.

I was in yesterday and the science student centre was pretty much deserted. Zero wait time. I imagine the commerce and arts ones would be much the same. These places get mega, mega busy in O-Week and in the first week of semester, so if you would like to have a chat with someone about your course try to get in early.

I agree with this! I went to the Commerce Student Centre today and it was so empty... I remember when I went there last year on Academic Advice day for midyear students and it was so packed.

Thankyou for that advice :)
I was able to make an appointment online for arts on the morning of the academic advice day.  The appointment for new students goes for 1 hour.

Hey Guys, I was wondering if you could help me a bit?

I undertook Biology of Cells And Organisms as UMEP last year, and now when I am about to select my subjects for Bachelor Of Science, my Study Plan says that I have been credited 12.500 points for the subject already. I also have Second Class Hons (H2B) = 72 grade.

Now I was wondering if I should do this subject again for the sake of "high" GPA for postgraduate Medicine?

I am not sure about anything relating to this, and would appreciate your help :)

Thankyou :)

Depending on your course, you may be encouraged to attend a few information sessions to give you more of a feel for your course. I know that Biomedicine students are particularly encouraged because you get asked to do a small amount of introductory work before week 1, but I cannot comment on other courses. In addition to that, a number of other optional information sessions are run during that week. Some of them are useful, but others are a bit of a waste of time. There's also plenty of parties, events, activities and stalls to go to and visit and you get the chance to sign up to any clubs and societies you may wish to join (your degree's student society is one you won't regret signing up for, unlike all the others the keen beans wishfully put their names down for, only to realise later on it was all just a waste of time and money). You'll be able to collect many freebies as well - if you play your cards right you should be good for stationery for a while. All in all, it's a good fun week and an opportunity to make new friends and experience what university life has to offer.

Hey guys! I'm doing biomed 1st year this year, and I just had a question regarding concurrent diplomas that I would like to seek everyone's opinion of.

I was tossing up between doing a maths and stats diploma or an informatics one. Just wondering, which do you guys think will be more practical/useful/relevant professionally in the future? I'm hoping to do the MD after the biomed degree btw.

Thank you all!! :)

Don't think maths/stats/informatics diplomas would be very relevant to a medical degree. It might be sort of relevant if you did research as well, as you'll have to analyse all the data you collect, but it might not be as beneficial as you would think.

I want to book a student advisor and I'll be starting first year science this year but which appointment type do I put in?
Is it prospective students or the Science student centre new enrolment or course advice?

Thanks!

What's Breakout1 on the timetable mean again?

(Image removed from quote.)

I think it's just a spare room booked in case the lecture / workshop has too many people, so it's an overflow. It doesn't affect how you go about timetabling, won't show up I think.

You can't do extra years to do more majors.  You can only do one major irrespective of how many you might want to do.  You can't take more than 300 credit points - your course offer only allows you to do that much.
There's also legitimately no point in getting 'recognised' for Immunology - Infections and Immunity IS an Immunology major, it's basically the old form of my major which was Microbiology and Immunology.
You can study anything at undergrad level and be eligible for medicine (MD at Melb) AS LONG as you have done the three prerequisite SUBJECTS.  There is no prerequisite major or expectation.  You can do an Arts degree, a Commerce degree etc and just do the prereq subjects (Anatomy, Physiology and Biochem) through breadth and still be eligible for the Melbourne MD.  It legit doesn't matter what major you do whatsoever.

S@S - you will only get credit for subjects that you apply to have credited.  So you get to decide which ones and how many.  You need to submit forms to the student centre - I would go and talk to the student centre about it and devise your course plan, then you will know which ones you want to credit and how many etc.  Congrats on your offer.

Ahh thank you so much for clearing that up  :)

Could someone please help me clarify what exactly happens on Academic Advice day, and why my email tells me that my enrolment time is 9-10am, when I can enrol online by myself?? Thanks !
Pls do not send me a pm about Aspire applications. The process has vastly changed since I applied.

From what I have gathered, it's really a bunch of information sessions about different things. There is however 3 sessions where you can ask staff specific questions but that can be done anytime.

As for the email, I didn't get anything regarding my enrolment time. Did it have a date on it?

It was on the email from VTAC titled "VTAC offer information". The date was on Academic Advice Day (23/1), which is why I'm a bit confused whether we need to complete enrolment during the time specified on the 23rd, or if that allocated time is simply for us to ask enrolment advice etc., but can complete it in our own time.
