Pharm is excellent, how dare you insult the Gods!

What i think you really mean to say is dont major in pharm at Melbourne Uni :p.

No but really, i have almost two majors now and a minor, pharmacology isn't extremely conceptually difficult in most cases if you work at it (but that's true of everything i suppose). Arguably, pure physiology has more difficult concepts (even though pharm has some physiology). I think its more the sheer amount and breadth of things you have to know. If you don't like it, it'll slowly wear you down and beat you into the ground. I've spent a lot of nights rote memorising the names of 50 different drugs and how they work.

I'm not going to lie, 2nd year pharm was one of the best subjects I've ever taken in uni. It's just this subject we're doing now (Drug drug to markets) is probably the worst I've done. It just falls pale in comparison to anything else I've done so far..

Top tip: don't major in pharm full stop. It's dreadful.

*doing one of the core pharm subjects at the moment. Tedious, poorly organised and unnecessarily difficult given the simplicity of the content.

Just when i thought i finally made a decision....

I know this is a tad premature, but once someone has done the final GENE20001 mid-semester test, I'd like them to confirm this message that appears at the top of all of Phil's online tutorials:

Quote
Instructions
The questions in the test will be taken directly from the tutorial questions, so it is advisable that you attempt all the tutorials. You may attempt these questions as many times as you like. Submit your answers to as many questions as you wish to complete. You may return later to answer questions left uncompleted.

Also, I recall Alex saying his final two lectures were going to be in the mid-semester test, although that doesn't appear to be the case? :S

Hi there,

Has anyone on here done the "InterviewReady" course run by GradReady for the MMI?

If so, would you recommend the course based on your experience? Is it really worth all that money, and did it work for you?

Thanks!

In general I don't think it's worth that amount of money, but people value preparation for medicine differently. If you think you need more help for an interview then it may well be worth it to you.

(disclosure: i've never seen the GradReady material & I occasionally compete with their service)

Damn...certainly the second semester subjects aren't that bad ? (PHRM30003, PHRM30002)

Looking at the price I think its too expensive. It's probably better to organise a group of students for weekly practise. Although it would be nice to have somebody who's been through the MMI to critique you.

Couldn't agree more with Trav.

Couldn't believe that the average for our mid sem was 50%, I told myself that I wasn't going to score that low and still messed it up - I guess this subject is meant to screw us all.... Have never done this bad before in my 3 years in uni LOL fml

Different subjects but man my third year grades have taken a hit compared to second year. I have no idea how simpak and stonecold etc smashed the hell out of bac, immuno and M2M.

Just did the third MST for GENE20001 and no it did not have exact questions from the relevant preparation tutorials. It did have very similar questions though, and it was super easy. There are only five questions in total, all of which involve basic calculations. You will be perfectly fine with them if you are moderately comfortable with the Section 3 tutorial questions, and you should be able to have it done within 10 minutes! Good luck. :)

Also, there were no questions from Alex's lectures. Phil's only.

For the immuno kids, most of it was just stuff we've done before so it's been good.

Neurodegeneration in a nutshell though: "We dunno what is happening". This module is the worst one.

Hello! I've been given the opportunity to have a major assignment remarked, however if this new marker marks it lower than my original grade, I have to accept this lower grade. Has anyone gone through this experience before? Is it worth risking getting a lower mark?

I wish somebody told me at the start of semester to memorise every single last detail for M2M. I still wouldn't do it, but knowing the standard would have been reassuring.

Agree with those above saying second year pharm is a great subject. I'd recommend doing it even if you don't end up doing the major. Some of the content is a little outdated, but whatever.

A couple of friends majored in pharm. Quite a few of them didn't seem to keen on the theory subjects. Heard differing things about the prac subject - not as much work as other prac subjects (no weekly work, for example,) but apparently a bit disorganised.

It's easy enough to structure your course plan so you can leave the choice between pharm and another major until semester 2.

I never felt like you had to memorize /every/ last detail but you actually had to be able to synthesize information for the M2M and Frontiers core subjects. Might have changed though.

For the immuno kids, most of it was just stuff we've done before so it's been good.

Neurodegeneration in a nutshell though: "We dunno what is happening". This module is the worst one.

If this is that Wallerian stuff, don't worry, your lecturer doesn't understand it either.
