BIOM20001 exam A was a very fair exam. One of the best fill-in-the-blank sections I've ever had, actually. There were enough recycled questions and most people seemed to finish with ample time to spare. Hopefully this is a sign of what to expect for exam B!

All I can say is embrace those fill in the blank questions whilst you have the chance.

idk have we? I was in John's lecture stream at 10-11 and my tutes were on Tue 11-12.
For Glee what songs did you guys sing this semester? And would you advise against having the tute and then the lecture back-to-back (in that order)? I might cram all the contact hours together into one mega Glee Singing sesh but idk if that's a good idea.
And good luck with calc! Just power through those exams and I'm sure you'll be fine for Monday  :P

oh hey I go to John's too!
Anyhow, we did sing,if you are out there, roar, royals, born to be wild, mad world and geronimo.
Since it is in southbank, make sure you leave yourself 15-20 mins to get there via tram.
Have the tut and lecture in one block back to back for sure, (1 hour lecture+1.5 hour tut, only 2.5 hours a week) This semester i only have to come 3 days a week coz of glee AHHA <3 it .
Cheers mate!

Are your exams all long/short answers now?

I'm freaking out because I feel like spewing word vomit all over my paper - don't know what details I should and shouldn't leave out.

^ I lived your nightmare today, ran out of time to finish 1.5 short answer questions so lost about 12 marks. Best to use dot points.
My exams are 2 * Competency (need to pass them only) made of MCQS and some short answer questions, 3 * Written exams (mixture of short answer qs and MCQ)

Does anyone here do research-based phys? Am I the only one who doesn't remember learning anything in the subject relevant to the last question about exercise in pregnant women? After sitting there with a blank mind for ages, I finally came up with an answer but not from stuff we had learnt this semester... I even asked Val if the values were right because nothing like it came up during the semester!

I did PHYS20009 in semester 2 last year. If your question was the same as mine, then I'm pretty sure that it had to do with metabolism. I can't remember the values given, but I think the pregnant women had more body fat? and I think their respiratory rates were significantly different too?

Anyway, the crux of what I said was that fat, protein, and carbohydrates all have different rates of metabolism (RER), so by virtue of having more adipose tissue, the amount of oxygen required to metabolise the fat would be different to someone who has relatively more protein in their body composition. From memory, fat had a value of 0.7, protein of 0.8, and carbohydrates of 1.0.

Out of curiosity, what did Val say about the question?

I did this exact thing!!! but less travel time sort of helped (no it didn't I'm lying)

Yeah, less travel time was one of my reasons too.

I think they were different questions. We had two groups of pregnant women, one who had been physically active in the past 2 years and a sedentary group who had done no regular exercise in the past 2 years. We were given values for HR, SV, MAP, VO2 and VE and the physically active group had a significantly higher SV, VO2 and VE than the sedentary group (other values were about the same in each group) and we had to give the mechanisms for why this was the case. His suggestions to me after the exam were that the hearts of the physically active were stronger as an adaptation to training and were therefore beating harder (hence increased SV) and that the energy systems being used by each group were different, hence the increased VO2 and VE in the active group.

Now that you've prompted my memory, that sounds like the same question then, especially with the sedentary v. active groups.

Like every math paper, if you can't answer part a you're unlikely to answer the other parts. In other words, I think I lost my soul sitting that exam

Personally was expecting a lot harder. It incorporated a lot of tricks and things of that nature but it wasn't heavily focussed on proofs nor linear regression (which kinda sucks cause I spent the last 3 days understanding linear regression), but overall I think it was actually a pretty well made exam.

Although yeah this kinda sucked. A whole question dedicated to a pretty small part of the course in my opinion (CLT) which caught a lot of people off guard.

I don't think I did well but I think I passed which was good ^.^

Ah that's a bummer. I feel as if the time pressure is there even when writing semi-paragraph semi-dot points. Best of luck to your (4?) other exams.

M2M is finally over and god's sake I had the biggest wrist cramp of my life. Half my mind was screaming to keep writing and push through all the agonising pain :(

It's a hurdle requirement. I just hope the marking would be a little more lenient. Fingers crossed
