Maths is a dreadful subject. Picking it was my worst mistake this semester AHHA.

I actually loved Calc 2 :P I thought it was a really nice break from bio and chem (especially chemistry). In saying so, I couldn't imagine majoring in maths or devoting a career involving math >_<

Did anyone sit the ARA exam too btw? I found that loooooooong as, I feel like I did a buttload of writing.

One of the multiple choice questions was exactly the same as one of the previous years hahahaha. (The ASX principles one)

Twas a long, annoying exam. Gotta love realising that you forgot to fill in one of the multiple choice answers 1 second before time is up though. >.<

So what are my fellow Class of 2017ers planning on majoring in?
I'm thinking of either Patho (heard the subjects are pretty badly taught tho), Micro/Immuno or cell/developmental bio   ;D

It's pretty early on to decide Mieow!! Wait til you've finished 2nd year before you make a firm decision! :PP

I've actually heard Pathology in 3rd yearis pretty good? Maybe they've improved it but yeh apprently its clear and straightforward.

MIIM I've heard is just top notch all round and same as CEDB.

I don't think pathology is taught particularly badly, though?

The only critique I have is that the notes provided on each lecture sort of spreads out, and the material doesn't appear to sequentially link at first glance. So it's kind of like you're learning separate segments of info in each lecture.  But if you sit down and review the lecture afterwards, you'll find it's easier for you to group each of the extraneous bits of info into 'bigger' categories, and then you can connect these bigger categories to understand the whole mechanism.

I could be wrong though, since this is my experience with 2 weeks worth of pathology lessons.

Cell bio! I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the major so far, it is interesting, not too difficult and i can honestly say i enjoy it.

If you already have an answer to this I want whatever is responsible for your ability to make decisions so easily and ahead of time. O_O

On a more serious note though, you really should try to keep an open mind and wait until second year before locking anything in. BIOM20001 and BIOM20002 are great opportunities for you to get a taste of what each major is like and what you'd like to pursue. Following first year I honestly thought I'd be doing cell and developmental biology but this was by far my least favourite topic in BIOM20001. :P At the very least you'll be able to work it out by deduction - I also know that biochemistry isn't my thing (but you'll feel better about it compared to first year chemistry) whilst I don't mind genetics and microbiology/immunology and hence keeping them both open with my subjects next semester (I'm taking MIIM20002 and GENE20002 alongside BIOM20002). I'm going to go out on a limb here and be all weird again, but despite what so many have said pathology was definitely my favourite part of BIOM20001. I've heard mixed things about the pathology major though, which makes me feel uncertain about pursuing it further.

Was thinking of Patho as well since diseases interest me.. but that probably doesn't lead to anything other than Medicine, which I have no chance with. What majors do people commonly take with Science that don't aim towards Engineering (or doesn't need math)?

If you don't want to pursue a biomedical profession, things like psychology, geography, agriculture, ecology, zoology, botany and geology are comparatively maths-light and don't really require it. Chemistry also technically doesn't require maths subjects but there are some complicated mathematical things involved.

(Obviously most of the biomedical majors are maths-free too, if you want to pursue them and become a research scientist or leave the field in favour of something non-science-y after your degree).

Can't speak for 3rd year but at 2nd year it's just basic calculus

I'm gonna fail maths this semester haha I didn't think it through.
Sounds terrible.
Lucky I still have the flexibility to change before the maths consumes me. -.-
