Thanks everyone :)

The information on Honours is usually pretty vague so it's really valuable to hear what you all think!

In a sense, applying for Honours is more like applying for a job then applying for a new course.

Where are you looking to apply, out of interest?
BSc (Hons) 2015 Melbourne

PhD 2016-??? Melbourne

I want to be an architect.

I'm one of those dreadful people who's applied for med too and will probably do that rather than Honours.

I really like malaria and HIV and have been looking at projects in that area. Bio21, WEHI, Burnet and Doherty all seem to run projects in that area, so it's just a matter of getting onto it.

In choosing a supervisor I'd ask if they've had students before/if they did, how long ago. A great researcher does not mean a great teacher.

Also, if you have to choose between two researchers who have never had a student, the younger is probably gonna be more understanding of you having no practical skills post-undergrad. All the young PhDs and post docs are chill as fuk and helpful. Probs cos they've more recently been in your shoes.

Are you referring to watching the lecture recordings?

Probs get through 3-4 weeks for 1 subject per day? XD

last semester when i was going ham, i had a 4 day stretch where i could watch (1.5x speed), and make notes for about 14 lectures in a day, waking up at about 4pm and sleeping around 7am
i crashed after the 4th day though and didnt retain much of the knowledge lmao, i think about 5 lectures a day or so is the most you can do meaningfully where you retain the knowledge and learn it well
EDIT: thinking about it more, i think it was closer to 11 a day (for commerce subjects)

Nah like reading over your completed lecture summaries after making notes through lecture recordings

With coffee and adequate sleep the night before, maybe 6 lectures properly, 8 probably with adderall (jk).

Daingit, should have done my research on Hons way earlier. I might just take a gap year...

Anyone else think this forum would benefit from a dedicated honours info/chat  thread? Where ppl can type their experiences, tips, faq, rant etc. There doesn't really seem to be much clear/helpful official information fromt he unis.

Just handed in my final assignment for the semester (which is due tomorrow) so after I catch up on lectures this afternoon, SWOTVAC BEGINS! Finally able to focus on understanding things rather than perfecting assessment pieces :)

Having watched all the lectures once throughout the semester I think I could make it through up to 12 in a day (4 weeks of a maths subject or 6 weeks of an IT subject) giving myself the time to properly work through any areas I'm not really understanding. Whether I will reach that capacity this swotvac is another question...

I usually just print out my annotated slides and I used to read all the lectures twice or three times in a day? When the amount of information is way too overboard I reread half of the subject for like three rounds everyday.

It is weird that I don't rewatch most lectures during SWOTVAC? :o I always feel like the slides/notes I write out are good enough and I'll just bore myself to death watching lectures I have already watched before. Yet again, the subjects I do are commerce/maths so there is an emphasis on tutorial work and application.

usually I write out all my notes again by hand and then keep going over them (not for all subjects) but I think I'm just going to print everything out, and re-watch the bits I don't understand

So I've pretty much been undecided about my major throughout this whole year and now that I have to select subjects for next year... I'm even more lost. I envy those who know what they want to do haha..

If I'm leaning towards a couple majors in the Life Sciences, what subjects should I take in order to keep a couple of these open until I ultimately decide on the one.

Oh and if anyone has done a Masters in Nursing Science or Optometry, after their bachelors, can you tell me what it's like or what subjects I'll need to take in my undergrad.

Thanks!!  :D
