Electives are free subject choices in the area related to your degree (i.e. Commerce) whereas a breadth subject must be from another faculty.

I find that generally the library will stock a few copies of prescribed textbooks, but usually, the current edition of the required text is restricted to two-hour or overnight loans. You can probably get away with borrowing an older edition, which is usually pretty much the same and often available as an 1-week loan, which can be renewed multiple times (up to 10 I think).

PROTIP: Get a CAVAL card (just ask at the desk at any unimelb library), which will allow you to borrow books from any university (including Monash and Deakin, for example). Often the textbook which is prescribed at Unimelb is available at another uni, but is not a prescribed text there. So, they will often be in short supply due to low demand, but also allow longer borrowing periods for a current edition text (not restricted to overnight), for the same reason.

Furthermore, if you borrow at Monash Uni, your books will be automatically renewed, until you are not allowed to keep renewing (10 times is the max), which means you effectively have an 11-week loan and you don't have to worry about constantly renewing your books every week.  This is much better than at Unimelb, where forgetting to renew your books on time even once means you have to return your books (you can't renew it again) and face a fine.

wow I never would have worked this out on my own, thanks!

& sorry guys for all the questions, but can we do first year subjects in second year?

By first year subject you mean level 1 subjects? Sure, as long as you don't have an anti-requisite, which is a subject that would render another subject's content to be below your level, for example calculus 2 is an anti-requisite to calculus 1. And also as long as you meet the pre-reqs (inc. study scores), I guess.

Hey guys:
Have anyone done MIIM20001 Principles of Microbiology & Immunology? Is the subject dry and tedious as the subject review says?
Thank you!

I thought it was a good enough subject to major in it...and now do a PhD in it and spend the rest of my life doing it.
I don't regret it! I reckon it's a good overview of the subject area if you're looking to dip your toes in a bit and see if Micro/Immuno is something you're interested in. Otherwise, it makes for a pretty good elective. There's a lot of rote learning, but it's definitely a manageable subject.

At the same time, bear in mind that many PhD students can say the same for their area of study.

I did a bit of micro/immuno in MCB found it quite boring given its very rote nature then again it seems like a hit and miss field in regards to interest- people either hate it or love it. I can highly recommend https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2016/BCMB20005 though was a very well taught and run subject and gives excellent lab exposure and isn't as rote based as micro/immuno can be :) .

Hey Guys,

Has any one had experience in buying ebooks (of our prescribed textbooks) from the co-op shop (http://www.coop.com.au/)

Are they actual PDF's that I can use anywhere on multiple devices or are they in some sort of nonsense propriety format only available to use in the co-op app?

Cheers!

From memory I don't think you can get it in PDF format to prevent any kind of distribution.

Thanks, that is what I was worried about:

But look at this:

http://www.coop.com.au/business-statistics-australia-new-zealand-pdf/9780170270588

The title specifically says "PDF", as it does with many other ebooks. What does this mean then?

OK guys, I just called co-op and even though the titles say "PDF" specifically, all their ebooks are not given as PDFs.

You can only access them through their app, which is only available for ios and android.

And they may or may not expire after a year

Does anybody know where I can get PDF's of textbooks (so I can use on a windows tablet like a surface and annotate them etc?)

Does any one know what the difference is between the 5th edition and 6th edition of:

Business Statistics: Australia New Zealand, Selvanathan

and Principles of Microeconomics, Gans , King

Can you get by on the 5th editions, and would it be worth saving approx $30 per book for the hassle of going with the 5th editions?

I recommend getting the latest edition for QM1 since you use the same textbook for QM2.
For intro micro the lecture slides were sufficient on their own, with the textbook only helping with further explanations and examples. The diagrams that the lecturer used were from the edition before the latest one so I guess there are only formatting changes with the latest edition.

Here are extracts from Sem 1 2015 subject guides

1.5 Prescribed References
Business Statistics: Australia and New Zealand, 6th Edition, by E. A. Selvanathan,
S. Selvanathan and G. Keller (published by Cengage Learning Australia, 2014).
In subject material, the textbook will often be referred to as \SSK". Note that:
 the sixth edition is the only one supported by the subject;
some bookshops have the abridged edition; you need the full version (the one without
`Abridged' anywhere in its title).
Required readings will be provided with each lecture.

Textbooks:
• Required -
Principles of Microeconomics (2015) – Joshua Gans, Stephen King, Martin Byford and N. Gregory Mankiw (GKM), 6th Edition. [The 5th edition can also be used.]. An ebook is also available from the publishers Cengage Learning.

Case Studies and Applications Microeconomics (2013) [2nd edition] – Jeff Borland.  This text includes summaries of key concepts and theories; a variety of applications; and key lessons.

The textbooks are required for the subject.  For most lectures they are the only prescribed reading.  At some points in the subject however we will move beyond the coverage of the GKM text.  For these lectures reading material is provided to you in the form of ‘Reading hand-outs’. These will be posted to the LMS subject webpage.

Hope this helps :)

So there are these lectures next week (not o-week) for jaffys along the lines of 'how to get the most out of lectures', 'organisational strategies', etc...
Are these any worth going to, has anyone been to them?

Thanks heaps for the help! pretty much completely answered my question!

Also, where did you find the sem 1 2015 subject guide? I think I would find it extremely useful.

Thanks so much for the help again!
