Hey Guys. What would be some good examples to use for an essay with this topic:

"Language has the power to shock, offend and incite emotion. How have recent stories in the media shown this to be true? Refer to at least two subsystems of language in your response"

At the moment i'm thinking of things like the slutwalk and the fines for swearing that were introduced, but nothing else come to mind (since i have no idea what's going on in the world).

John Elliot's "Abo"  remark on Can of Worms would be a good start.

I think Justin Sherman from the Western Bulldogs has been suspended for 4 weeks for an on field racial slur against a Gold Coast player.

There was a recent case were a Labor politician 'meowed' at Julie Bishop in parliament.

Do a search on Sam Newman or Kyle Sandilands.  You will find plenty of other non-PC language.

Alternatively, if you wanted to take a different approach with this essay, you could look at language inciting positive emotion.  I think some of Anna Bligh's press conferences during the QLD floods have some really moving language in them.  Try watching some of them on YouTube.

Oh wow thanks  :). I guess i'll start with these.
Watching almost no tv for the last 15-20 weeks has really ruined me for media examples  :-\
