Hard to get 65%+?

How hard is it to get over 65 per cent at UOM?

I know it's kind of a general question and the degree of hardness can vary between courses..but I was just wondering

I need 65 per cent and over in my final two years in my undergraduate degree in order to be successful and be guaranteed a spot  in Master of Urban Planning

Thanks in advance :D

not at all. anyone can achieve this, some will without any work, others may need to do a lot more if it's a hard subject for them.. you'll be fine, just study hard and see how you go :)

65% is pretty easy. You won't need to study that much, so you'll have heaps of time to have fun :)

personally, i don't agree with the above two posters. as you said it does depend on what subjects you study. that said, if you're not a star student like me, but study consistently for each subject, you should be able to reach it. i do know of a few people in my cohort who weren't offered csp places who did put a decent amount of effort into their studies.

And just generally, I would recommend trying to do your best at Uni!  Don't just see your requirement of 65% for postgrad and settle for 65-70.  If you are capable of doing more, you may as well put in the effort and be rewarded with a H1 or H2A.

That's true.  Especially when your exams are worth a massive 80% of the assessment... For 3 subjects.  It really does becomes an uphill battle if you're not a star student.

But at the end of the day, if you choose your subjects wisely, choose subjects that you enjoy and are good at, a 65 shouldn't be too hard to reach.

Can anyone shed light on how the GPA is calculated? Is it just an average?

Yeah it's just the average (more info here http://www.monash.edu.au/exams/gpa-wam.html) should be the same as UoM

Yeah it's just the average (more info here http://www.monash.edu.au/exams/gpa-wam.html) should be the same as UoM

Although at Unimelb, the GPA is out of 7

80+ = H1 = 7 (GPA)
75-79 = H2A = 6.5 (GPA)
70-74 = H2B = 6.0 (GPA)
65-69 = H3 = 5.5 (GPA)
50-64 = P = 4.5 (GPA)
<50 = N = 0 (GPA)

GPA is converted as above and then averaged and weighted according to year of undergraduate study.
First Year of undergraduate study = x1
Second Year of undergraduate study = x2
Third Year of undergraduate study = x3

Subjects can definitely vary in difficulty, but getting a 65 is generally not difficult if you put in the effort.

This is the ACER GPA, not the UoM one, although it's used for all med/dent courses at UoM. UoM do some phenomenally confusing stuff with their standard GPA calculation and I have no idea why :(

I think generally most students don't get 65+ straight away, but once they get used to it, marks do tend to go up. The average marks people get for second and third year tend to be much higher than in first year, particularly if they're taking subjects in the same discipline throughout that time. There are exceptions to this though, for instance if many people have compulsory first year subjects (maths and economics are good examples), there will be a jump in difficulty in later years when the subject is no longer compulsory and everyone remaining in the class actually wants to do it. But overall, if you go to uni and find that 65+ is difficult, it will get a lot easier as you keep going.
