What are your subjects? Oh and scores would be great if possible.  ;D

Basically my subjects are:
- English Language
- Maths Methods
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Japanese SL
- Further/Spesh

I'm in yr 10 at the moment, and I will be choosing my subjects for next year soon.
I'm currently doing Psychology 1/2 and Methods 1/2. I'm definitely doing Methods 3/4 next year, but Psych 3/4..?

Some Qs (if you can be bothered answering)
1. Do you think I should do both subjects next year, or just Methods?
2. In year 12, should I do further maths and possibly do well on it but get scaled down, or do okay in specialist maths and get scaled up? Which is more safe?
3. What scores am I looking at to be able to get an ATAR above 90?

Cheers  8)

I'm doing/done:
2010: Bio (42)
2011: English, Spesh, Chem, Methods, Physics

3. What scores am I looking at to be able to get an ATAR above 90?

1. Do both if you think you can manage it. If I had a choice of the two, I'd go with methods though (very biased opinion though...)
2. Don't do any subject because of scaling. DO it because you like/enjoy it.
3. 37 raw asian 5 gets easily above 90

I'm doing:
2011: Physics, IT Applications
Currently planning on doing:
2012: English (or Literature), Methods, Specialist, Chemistry, IT Software Development (only if the teacher decides to use either Perl, Python or Ruby as the programming language instead of Visual Basic...)

If you're capable of doing specialist I would suggest do specialist. You don't have to deal with box plots.

I gotta say, spesh is a great deal more enjoyable than further. If you are good at maths and enjoy it, you could consider doing further the year earlier to try and get a really high score.
Last year I did further (44)
This year I am doing
English :(
Methods :) - Finshed the course two months ago
Specialist :) - Finished the course today, YEY!
Chemistry - Finished the course last thursday
Physics
2012-2016: Aerospace Engineering/Science (Double Major in Applied Mathematics - Monash Uni)
TI-NSPIRE GUIDES: METH, SPESH

Co-Authored AtarNotes' Maths Study Guides

I'm starting to get too old for this... May be on here or irc from time to time.

1. Also depends on what results you're getting in those respective subjects. Do the subject(s) which you feel confident scoring well in and are enjoying. That's really the fundamental key to succeeding in any VCE subject. If you're prepared to put in the work and effort, then anything is possible.

2. Agree with Rohitpi.

3. Agree with Rohitpi. Try using ATARCalc.

I'm doing/have done:

2010 - Accounting (37)
2011 - English, Mathematical Methods (CAS), Chemistry, Legal Studies, Latin

I really have to agree with everyone here. If you have a good aptitude for maths and you enjoy it then i really recommend doing spesh next year. Probably my most enjoyable subject as it's interesting and often challenging. Just don't choose your subjects based on scaling.

At the moment i'm doing:
  • Methods
  • Specialist Maths
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • English Language

2010 : Accounting
2011 : Methods (CAS) | Chemistry  | Physics  | English Language  | Specialist Maths

2012: BCom/BSc @ Monash!

2.  I'm also having problems with this !! arghh

I think you need to consider that a lot of kids doing further are quite capable of doing maths and as tony3272 said they have a natural aptitude for it. So i guess if you do further, the point is to not get complacent, i think thats the main downfall of a lot of mathematically gifted students.

choose wisely :)

I'm currently doing (year 10) Literature 1/2, psychology 1/2 and PE and health 1/2
Next year I plan to do methods, english, chem, bio, legal and history revs 3/4
Then year 12 methods, english, chem, bio and literature.
I'm dropping psych next year, not because I don't enjoy the subject, just because I have too many subjects I want to do haha. so if you enjoy it, and think that you will be able to handle the work load next year, maybe give it a shot. But i guess its important to keep in mind the extra pressure that will come with doing two 3/4s  ;)
Subject selection should be based on what you enjoy and what you are good at. Don't pick a subject for the sake of scaling, if you are going to hate every minute of it.
Maybe ask your math or careers teacher if you are still battling things over?
Good luck :)
Always here to help!

1. I always advocate doing two 3/4 subjects in Year 11 if you think you can handle it. If your results have been consistently good, go for it.
2. Do spesh. I've heard it's a lot more interested. I personally get a little annoyed at students who pick easy subjects for an easy 40+.
Choose subjects that will challenge you -> work harder -> be more satisfied with yourself.
3. Yeah, I think rohitpi is right. Play around with atarcalc. There's even an iPhone app for it!

I did/am doing:
2010: Indonesian SL (50) and Revolutions (46)
2011: Literature, Renaissance, Methods, Philosophy

2010: Methods (50)
2011: Art Biology Chemistry English and Spesh

I'd go for both 3/4s next year if you can handle it. Less stress in year 12. That is what I should have done last year...

Do spesh! Further is boring, and spesh isn't that much harder than methods. I did two weeks of further this year and was ready to shoot myself by the end... :)

^Not that I'm biased or anything... :P

I'm currently in year 11.

I am currently doing:
  • English Language
  • Methods
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Adv.Gen Math
  • Economics 3/4

As for next year, I'm going to be doing the same subjects, but I'm not sure if I should drop Physics (don't like it) for something like UMEP/MUEP maths (I like maths a lot, lol).

And do spec, further (as previously stated by jane1234^) makes me sad because it's so boring.

Do two 3/4s. They're often more interesting than their year 11 counterparts. Psych and methods are both very different, but you can prepare for them if you put in the work. Both have a lot of prep books, and the style of learning is quite different. If you're mathematically inclined, go with spesh. If you like maths but it doesn't come naturally to you, do further. Don't worry about the scores needed for 90 now - focus on the individual subjects and do as well as you can in them. I got my own study scores completely wrong (predicted higher for some subjects, predicted lower for others), so don't bank on getting a 35 in this and a 40 in that.

In terms of subjects,  I did:
2009: Physics and English Language
2010: Methods, English, French, Chemistry, UMEP Physics

Both of my year 11 subjects were used in my primary four; I got super involved in other things in year 12 (and as a consequence, missed a lotttttt of school - I don't think I attended 80% of classes). I'd definitely recommend doing two subjects in year 11 as it frees you up to do other things in year 12.

Yeah, I also recommend doing two 3/4s if your school will let you. If they don't, just pick the 1/2 version of the 3/4 subject you want to do and absolutely ACE it in the first couple of weeks. This means getting through all the work and gaining a solid enough understanding to the point the teacher is flustered and does not know what to do. The school will have no choice but to move you up.

This is the lucky situation that I found myself in. I started the year doing Physics 3/4 and intending to do VCE IT 1/2. School decided to move up to IT 3/4 after I finished what was supposed to be like a term's worth of work in two weeks (in my defense, it was ridiculously easy MS Excel stuff). Maybe it was easier for me since IT is such a lightweight course, I don't know if your school would do the same as my school (or even for any other subject).

But yeah, another good thing about doing 2 subjects in year 11, is that if you do 5 subjects in Year 12; You'll be doing a total of 7 subjects without an above normal workload. This means the subject you do worst in won't count at all to your ATAR. You could also do 4 subjects in year 12, and still end up doing a total of 6; but you may as well take the regular workload and end up with that extra 3/4.

Psychology, English, Media, Business Management and English Language. I also did Japanese (SL) last year.

I also did the following 1/2 subjects:
English (Year 10)
Literature
Japanese (Year 10)
Advanced General (Year 10)
Methods
Psychology
Business Management
Media

Yeah, I did quite a few 1/2s for no apparent reason.
2010: Japanese SL [28]
2011: Psychology [40] | Business Management [34] | English [32] | English Language [34] | Media [41]
2012-2014: Bachelor of Arts (Languages) @ Monash

I'm currently doing: (1/2)
Psychology
English
Philosophy
Design Fashion
Media

and next year I plan on doing the same (3/4)

I seem to be one of the only ones here not doing a maths subject  :o

I chose these subjects purely out of interest (except English - luckily I've always been brilliant at English  ;)) and I would encourage you to do the same. You'll find it easier to avoid procrastination when studying, and so will get a greater score  :D
