Is it alright to do English Language 3/4 without doing 1/2?

Certainly is. Lots of the highest scoring students in EL often didn't sit the 1/2 course.

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

I was about to post the same question.

Can I extend it in saying by asking what essential knowledge would be in units 1 & 2 that are not revisited in 3 & 4?

I did, and this has been answered a lot of times, but I ceebs looking up the threads. In short, study metalanguage over the summer - it's revisited, but do you really want to be learning a whole lot of terminology for the first time among a cohort which has been using it for a year?
