Doing Bio without 1/2
« on: August 15, 2011, 10:46:03 pm »

Hi guys,
I was just asking this question for a friend.

How difficult would it be to do biology without unit 1 and 2 for next year?

Would she miss out on many key information and concepts required for it? Or would she be able to catch up relatively quickly with sufficient practice and revision?

Any comments and opinions are welcome! :)
Thanks.

Well there are some things that we learn in 1 and 2 (like the cell organelles/structure of organic molecules/mitosis and meoisis) which is a bit of a headstart when you're doing 3 and 4, but there's some pretty useless stuff that we trudge through in Unit 2, like the chapters on ecology. Honestly, there were heaps of new concepts even if you've done 1 and 2 (like Immunity/diseases/evolution/genetics) so you're not at a huge disadvantage. Even so, Biol is still pretty intense, and I found that Units 1 and 2 helped me to understand how to answer questions and think on the right lines, and that's half the battle because of the way the questions are worded, but if your friend can pick that up quickly then it'll be fine  :D

You can catch up relatively quickly. I did Bio 3/4 without 1/2 and I was a bit confused with the first AoS regarding the organelles and such, but after that, you'll be fine. The main problem for me was that the teacher taught that part assuming we already knew it. Just read up on it during the Summer or get a friend or someone to teach it and it'll make a lot more sense than if you just read it out of a textbook. Then again, I did it in year 11 so I had far more time to focus on Bio. Not sure how it'd go in year 12 if that's what you're doing.

A friend of mine got A+ for biology in her mid year exam this year :) She didn't do units 1 and 2 last year. So it just shows that it's possible to do well still :) Having said that, she worked really hard

Yeah I'd say go for it, I'm doing 3/4 without units 1/2 and am able to follow along without any problems. Only biology-related knowledge I have is bits and pieces from Year 10 and 8 science. :P

Its doable. I know a couple of 50s who didn't do 1+2, I didn't and ended up with a decent score :)

apart from some minor information about organelles as shinny said, its definatelly not relevamt, at least thats what friends who did the one two said. I did the 3/4 and had no troubles

42 is a decent score...if you wanted to go to tafe! lol i joke, i wanna have your babies.

you can do better this year, i believe in you son! im not joking here, i really think you can do better this year, son.

anyway, a mate of mine did biology III+IV without I+II and got an properly decent score for it.

if youre a savant or have an unsusally large hippocampus, you should be fine. otherwise, hard work and dilligence should get you there.

such is life.
