Business Description
Qantas Airways Limited (QAN) operates domestic and international airlines under the widely known 'Flying Kangaroo' banner. These airline operations are complemented by extensive holiday travel activities, catering facilities for QAN services and external customers, ground handling of baggage and freight, and engineering and maintenance services. As at 31 December 08 Qantas operates a fleet of 226 aircraft.
Strategy Analysis
QAN's core strategy is to grow profitably its two flying brands, Qantas and low-cost Jetstar. Qantas will seek to strengthen its leading positions in premium markets. Jetstar will expand locally and into international leisure markets. QAN also has Freight and Frequent Flyer businesses.Qantas Airways reported NPAT down 66% to $210m for the half-year ended 31 December 2008. Total revenue for the half-year was $7.9bn, an increase of $134m or 1.7% on the pcp compared to capacity growth, measured in Available Seat Kilometres, of 0.4%. Diluted EPS was 10.9 cents compared to 31.6 cents last year. Net operating cash flow was $378m compared to $1.29bn last year. The interim dividend declared was 6 cents compared with 18 cents last year.
