definately haliebury, the private school atmosphere is much better than state schools, including MHS and all the other selective schools.

Is that just an assumption?

(not raging, just curious)

But yeh, I'd go for haileybury, seems like a much better school, and has a solid reputation :)

haileybury :)
I may be a bit biased but it has a wide variety of subjects and if your sister is starting in year 9, then year 9 is an awesome year as it has the Options programme where in a year you go on 3 ten day camps (20-30 options to choose from and most of them aren't expeditions, however it is compulsory to go on one expedition), one each term with another 10 day excursion in melbournes cbd for 10 days in term 4.
We have to do unit 1 subjects ( RE in year 8 and IT and Health&Human Development in year 9) however those are really a bludge. 4 unit 1/2 subjects in year 10 (including unit 2 IT which is compulsory) and in year 11 it is compulsory to do 2 unit 3/4 subjects unless your first year at Haileybury is in year 11.
Bad things would probably be the excessively high cost of canteen food, lots of extra stuff we have to pay for, also Saturday sport is compulsory.
The Senior (Year 10-12) Girls school is pretty new (3-4 years of year 12 i think), however, the girls school performance is outstanding, with a girl international student last year achieving 99.95

john monash isn't a reputable selective school yet, haileybury on the other hand is a well established private school.

just a thought.

congrats to your sister too.

my sister went to macrob, so she has had first hand experience of the "elite" selective sschool atmosphere,

I actually wanted to go to Melbourne high, alot of friends were going, but then my sister and parents advised me to take the private school offer instead, and i can say it has been worth it.

Of course melbourne high is a GREAT school, but this is what i personally think

although the academics may be better, they are not significantly better for a school that selects ALL its students based on academic merit.
i went to a state school beforing going to a private school and have found the differnece immeasurable.

i reckon the saturday sport is probably one of the better things about private schools, but of course thats a personal judgjment

Insomuch as it matters in Australia, a private school looks better than a selective state school. In many circumstances, when you apply for a job they will have graduates from your school working there and they'll recognize the value those schools offered. I elected not to go to MHS (not just for that reason) and whilst it wasn't an entirely "good" decision, in terms of profile I don't think it can compete.

Granted, although Haileybury gets good results, they don't have the reputation and prestige of a top elite private school. They also have a bad reputation for poaching other students but that's a more...ideological complaint

MHS has an extensive sport and co/extra-curricular program, just saying. Clubs for just about everything, pretty heavy student leadership opportunities, heaps of affiliation with organizations outside of the school etc.

If I had a younger sibling in this scenario I would personally prefer him/her to go to JMSS. The selective atmosphere where everyone is smart really does pull you up academically, and opposed to MHS/MacRob it is actually a co-ed school which I think eliminates a few of the negatives of those schools. The amount of (excuse me for the phrasing) socially inept boys and girls that come out of the school is somewhat concerning, it is definitely a minority, but still a big concern in my opinion.

Haileybury girls school does offer scholarships more regularly compared to the boys school from what I hear (someone with better knowledge please confirm/deny), and I do find that from my peer group outside of school, a lot of kids have been dragged down into some pretty bad stuff as a result of going to private schools. Whilst it's not something that is non-existent at selective schools, I tend to think there is some correlation between an academically elite cohort, and a cohort which is generally the "right crowd" you'd want a friend/sibling to be in.

That said obviously private schools (or any other school for that matter) do produce good students, and in the end most of what you get out from  your education is based on your own attitude.
