Mod Action: Off-topic discussion, split thread from Re: Specialist Math scaling

I doubt 50 will go to 55...the only subjects that do (classic/dead languages) are impossible to score above 47-48 in, ie. no-one actually gets a scaled 55. Seeing as a fair few people will get 50 in Spesh, and it's IMO way easier than Latin/Ancient Greek, it just plain shouldn't scale past 53, maybe 54 tops. It's unfair.

any system that allows spesh to go to 54-55 is questionable.

i think spesh should stay at the scaling it was before these changes. 52 is already a distinct advantage.

it is ridiculous that a 41 should go to 50,

id say getting a 50 in further is harder than getting a 41 in specialst.

I really don't think you realise just how little study most people doing further actually do.

Of my mates that do further, 5 of the 7 NEVER take any of their books home. NEVER. One of them didn't buy his textbooks for the year. Said he would look on with the person next to him. Now comapre that with Spesh kids, most of them started before the year started.

I'm a guy

I only give what I have left over, I don't give everything, some fortnights that will be $50, some fortnights that will be $0. I live in a really fucked up suburb. When you see some of the shit I've seen, it's pretty easy to realise that some people need that money more than you do.

For example, this mentally scarred me, DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE EASILY HURT ETC, one day, I was walking to school, and there was a guy leaning into a telephone box, I was 14 at that time, I thought to myself, did he pass out? He looked pretty stuffed up. So I said, "Hey man, you ok?" Didn't move, I went around to look through the glass and he'd been stabbed, there was bloood soaking and I'm fairly sure he was dead, he wasn't breathing and there was no fog on the glass oppposite of his mouth. He also looked extremley pale. When you see shit like that, you think to yourself, there are people like this who have a kids, what happens to his children? Drugs? Abuse?

@ Nokia: I know I'm going off topic - but attitudes like that are quite shallow, and education and knowledge about other cultures is the key, I reckon :D

@Others: Truth has it that I've lost heaps of marks throughout this year...I think I count about 22 SAC marks this year? Plus 4 from physics midyear and 2 from chem midyear.

It's shallow. But not everybody has had the chances you have had. You go to one of the finest high schools in the world. Try explaining to a white guy who gets jumped after school by a bunch of black guys ( or Asian or European) so they can still his Ipod that he should learn their language to gain insight into their culture. It becomes a bit hard to think logically at some times.

Hmm...yeah I get your point, although you should be very careful of what you say, coz it can be taken the wrong way. Having said that, I only got to this high school by a massive stroke of luck - I was in a regular state school in northern Victoria for my early high school life. Then again, I realise that I've been somewhat harsh.

And oh god, really sorry to hear that :( :( that must have been awful

I was never questioning your right to an excellent education. You are as deserving as any other kid. But the reality of the situation is, no matter if you got to your school through sheer hard work or rich parents, you're at that school. You have access to some of the best facilities and teachers in the entire world.

I'll give you an example at what I'm saying. Let's take Indians and Pakis, surely through education they would gain insight into their cultures and learn to live in harmony. But you try and explain that to somebody who's mother and father were shot dead by someone of the opposite nationality. There are things that go beyong logic in life. Where logic just can't explain some things. Education is obviously the key to unity and tolerance, that's not the question. The question is how do you get people to see that in horrific circumstances.

I have a friend, he's serbian, when his father was growing up, the serbo-croat war was occuring. His father hid in a room and his parents and sisters were slaughtered by the enemy forces. His father just can't stand Croatians, hates all of them on sight. Now how do you explain to a person with that kind of racial prejudice logically that he should forgive horrific crimes such as these? Logically, you can, pragmatically, it is nearly impossible.

@Natters, It's true. Go to Footscray, Broadmeadows or St Albans past 9pm at night, go to a seedy area, in an alley, in a park or behind a train station, I dare you to spend more than 10 minutes.

Or go to Keon Park station (where I get off), there was a dude once who was bleeding from the head - someone broke a beer bottle on his head...

And yeah NC - I know exactly what you are saying. Before we judge someone, we have to think, if we experienced that ourselves, would we think the same way?

I know what you mean. Someone did get stabbed 2 feet from our driveway during the holidays at the end of last year, in the same general area (i.e. western suburbs)

THIS IS ABOUT SPECIALIST MATHS SCALING PEOPLE.

Sorry, I'm no mod but I think we all understand that the world is not perfect, and it never will be. Some have it harder than others, and unfortunately thats a way of life.

But now, back to talking about scaling.

Nice sociology discussion here, but can I bring everyone back on topic please.

[/offtopic, migrants who refuse to learn/speak English are just as bad as ignorant xenophobes. There are many examples of aliens actively refusing to integrate with the local community, imo they do not deserve to be here.]
