Language Analysis
‘Keyed In’

An opinionative piece entitled ‘Keyed in’ was written by ‘Voxi’ and appeared on an online journal, published on the 23rd of May 2009. Voxi expresses his/her views regarding the ongoing debate about technological advancements, and whether it is affecting humans positively. Voxi uses a passionate and determined tone to convince the reader that technology is a part of our evolution and is a necessity to our advancements as humans. Voxi targets the younger audience by providing a familiar setup and a web-page. Conversely Voxi also targets people who are ignorant regarding the advantages of technology.

Voxi creates comparisons between people who follow technology and those do not. He/She starts out by explaining how some people are ‘naturally afraid’ of new things and frightened at the idea of leaving their ‘comfort zone’, By quickly juxtaposing these views with people who are ‘fired up by news things’ and ‘grab the future with both hands’, Voxi clearly separates the dull from the exciting. This positions the reader to agree with Voxi accordingly. The teenage generation, or any generation if you will, would do anything to enhance their future, and to separate those ‘afraid’ of moving forward to those who ‘make it happen’, Voxi affectively draws the attention of curious teenagers.

Voxi emphasises the advantages of technology and questions those who think otherwise. In a forceful tone, Voxi claims that technology has ‘revolutionised the way we communicate with each other’ and how its ‘Promising to revolutionise the way we learn and think.” Voxi puts emphasis on the word ‘revolution’ by using repetition to stick in the readers head. Voxi shuns those who ‘fear this will reduce human intelligence’ by adding a quotation from a podcast. This quotation informs us that ‘every moment were alive’ our mind is ‘changed’ by ‘every little experience’, which claims that technology can make us even more intelligent. The older generation of viewers come to consider the advantages technology and think twice about what it’s doing for our future. By asserting that technology has the ability to heighten our intelligence, readers develop interest in taking advantage of technology. Voxi enthusiastically asks ‘Why wouldn’t you want it in your life?” to rhetorically enforce the advantages to the audience further.

Voxi creates a sense of alarm within the piece and establishes the values of technology. Voxi undermines the older audience by stating ‘it’s the older generation who are less familiar with it’, the conventional ways of gathering information such as going to the library, is quickly dismissed by stating how we have ‘Wikipedia’ and ‘Google’ to generate quicker results. By adding “that’s a win!” the audience dismisses and questions the validity of past ways of education. It also positions the reader to want to feel modern and ‘up to date’, to feel a part of the ‘scene’. This is directed at the older audience and may generate an urgency to encapsulate technologies simplicities.

Voxi lists more advantages regarding technology by stating that ‘global shopping, online banking, working out the itinerary for your holiday, looking up Google maps” all serve purpose to educate the older audience. A tonal shift from excited to informative re-assures the reader that technology is benefiting man-kind; this includes appealing to the readers’ sense of logical thinking. As the reader now sees the advantages of the internet, they are positioned to feel dis-heartened by traditional forms of shopping, banking and using a map.

A cleverly placed image can be seen next to the text, portraying the shape of a human head and a memory chip within. This, perhaps, is symbolic of the new generation. With new technology apart of our everyday life, this is, in some respects, becoming a part of us, and that we are moving forward. The younger audience associate the unique power of the human brain with the micro-chip. This enhanced the main contention of the piece, which is made prominent by Voxi, that technology is important in the evolution of our species. This is calculated to make the younger audience accept our advancements, and let technology become a part of us.

Voxi finishes the piece on a positive note, while validating to the reader the illogical outcome of ignoring technology. ‘Let’s be excited’, Voxi reassures the reader that this growth as humans is for good intentions and without it ‘we’d still be swinging in the trees and huddling in caves’ – imagery is used to enforce Voxi’s contentions, claiming that we can ‘push back the boundaries of darkness and ignorance’ from the times where people ‘struck rocks together and found the magic of a spark’. Adding a sense of humour, this targets the people who don’t accept technology. Voxi further attacks them by stating ‘What a loser you’d be’ without technology. This positions the older reader to conclude that without technology, the world isn’t capturing the true essence of possibility and encouraging primitive styles of living.

By comparing the advantages and disadvantages of technology, the reader is positioned to agree with voxi’s point of view. Voxi targets anyone who opposes technology by labelling them ‘afraid’ and ‘loser’, this polarisation makes the audience agree with voxi’s contentions, and force them to idealise the notion of technology and its advantages.

Avoid starting your paragraphs of with Voxi!
Alternate each paragraph, for instance.

Appealing to the audience's sense of justice, Voxi declares that...

Voxi incorporates

Through the use of inclusive language

It looks okay in terms of analysis
But its sounds quite formulaic in a way, you have every technique in a separate paragraph, and you don't really mix it up
perhaps combining how two techniques may work together to create a certain effect on the reader, and changing up your sentence structures.
2010: Chinese SL (36 ---> 45.6), Accounting (48 ---> 48.4)
2011: English (47), Methods (50), Spesh (43 ----> 52.7), Chemistry (48 ----> 49.3), Physics (38)
ATAR: 99.90
2011 UMAT:
S1:[105] S2:[45] S3:[90] Overall:[80] Percentile: 100th

Need chem/methods tutoring?
I'm offering it based predominantly in the south-eastern suburbs (Caulfield-ish) - PM me.

6/10
-Focus away from the formula
-You keep quoting from the article initially, this is a language analysis. Explaining and informing are not a persuasive technique
Tonal shift from what?
Cleverly placed is your opinion.
