Jelly beans, yes or no?

I read somewhere that it's good to have a few jelly beans before an exam because they are low GI and release energy gradually, having said that I don't exactly want to become high halfway through the exam...

On top of eating a substantial breakfast do you guys think jelly beans will do any good?

Whut. They can't possibly be low GI. They're basically just raw simple sugars. Get some complex carbs into you if you want gradual energy release. And low GI doesn't mean it releases the energy later, and hence become 'high halfway through the exam', it'll just release the energy slowly so you don't ever have any peaks to begin with. To be honest, just eat what you normally eat. Last minute nutrition supplementation isn't going to make or break your ATAR. Indigestion from overeating or having some weird combination possibly could.

just have your normal breakfast
nothing you normally eat (unless it's literally nothing - youll get peckish cause its a three hour exam!) will adversely affect your exam performance
jelly beans are not going to make you high... -_- - marajuana willl

Have a handful of jelly babies or glucose tablets before your exam, it's reasonably well documented that cognitive function consumes glucose and then becomes less effective as your BGL drops

Why is a banana considered low gi ( or is it :S) isnt it mostly simple sugars? ( fructose, sucrose)

I think it's medium GI - the sugars are released slowly into bloodstream..so sustained energy release means there's no sudden high in energy then a sudden crash

But wouldn't this just cause a "crash" situation after a sudden rise in blood sugar? Wouldnt that be kind of unhelpful? :-\

Bananas are low GI because they're high in fiber, which controls the release of sugar into the blood

Not really. Your blood sugar isn't going to spike and then plummet unless you're diabetic or unless you eat far more than just a few. You'll eat the jelly beans and they'll just provide a nice buffer against the inevitable drop in blood sugar that's coming up.

In an english SAC earlier this year I started coughing like a tractor and had to leave to get a drink of water... SO I'm bringing with me some butter menthols just in case.

and my water bottle is loaded with a potent sugar-water mixture... just cos I thought it'd be cool.

I kid you not, I was thinking today about the most effective way to get high during the exam for my context piece. I figgure I could write a far better creative story under the influence of mind-altering substances... but my Text response and language analysis would surely suffer, and I'm not sure exactly what the VCAA rules are on lighting up halfway through the exam.

Do your text response and LA first, then light up. Problem solved. Then proceed to add chrisjb's VCE English exam to the following list.
