I'm asian too, and I skipped French 1/2 and did 3/4 this year. I'm doing fine, quite well, I must say.
It is not difficult, for me at least.
But what i suggest you do, is to go on the VCAA website, download some of the past exam papers for French 3/4 along with the corresponding listening tasks, and try to listen to the audio, and answer the questions, and skim through the reading comprehension section in the papers.
Don't expect yourself to understand everything 100%, haha, because students by the end of year 12 are supposed to be struggling on that stuff too, so it's ok. But as long as you understand some or most of the texts, spoken and written, you should definitely think about doing 3/4. By the end of units 3 and 4, you'll be surprised to find yourself understand significantly more than you do now.
I mean, that's how I decided to do French 3/4 without 1/2.
But keep in mind, that I've been doing French since around kindergarten, so it's ok if you don't understand everything. I still don't. But those papers are very representative of the course and its requirement.

As of the writing task, don't be too put off if you think you're incapable, because you will get better throughout the year, with a lot of practice.
Well, if you do decide to do French 3/4, I wish you the best of luck and surround yourself with the language.
