VCE Summer School still accepting applications

Run every summer at the University of Melbourne campus, this is a program dedicated to providing educational services to disadvantaged/underrepresented students. It lasts for two weeks (with the option of living on campus) and offers academic classes on your subjects as well as social support/events and general advice for VCE.

All the tutors have completed at least a year of tertiary studies, many have completed more and some have graduated completely, so you'll be getting a decent quality of education from people who've recently gone through the VCE system. I've been teaching there for a couple of years now and I think some other members are as well (I know lex is taking PE!).

Applications are still open if you're interested or if you're looking to get a head start on the year. We cover year 11 and year 12 subjects, as well as covering those that generally aren't done in depth by other courses. If finanical circumstances could prevent you from attending, contact the directors and they'll see what they can do with respect to bursaries and so forth. And finally, whilst we give preference to those from disadvantaged backgrounds, all applications are welcome for the places that aren't filled by such students.

Any questions about it post below, but the pertinent information is on their website
http://union.unimelb.edu.au/summerschool

We're a really friendly bunch, email or call the office if you want and somebody will help you out :)

That website isn't loading for me, but what actually is this Summer School thing?

Is it something like one of those introduction to Unit 3 kind of stuff or ..? (sounds like it's a bit more than that).

How much does it cost and do you have to rock up every day for those two weeks?

It covers the whole year, but bear in mind that it's pretty heavily compressed to fit into the time you get. So it's basically a summary of the course plus a set of notes.

$170 for the two weeks, covers the academic stuff (classes/notes/tutor chat etc) plus whatever social activities run in that time (BBQ, free breakfast etc.). You can not come to class if you have other things on. I remember last year one girl missed the last few days because she was going on family holiday.

I did it at the beginning of this year it was fantastic! It made me feel more confident particularly in Physics and the class sizes were great - especially Methods because mine has 25 people in it and it was nice getting some one-on-one attention!
Highly recommend this to anyone thinking about it! I had a great time and it was also a surprisingly social experience as well. :)

Sounds great will definitely be attending. :)

Does the price change according to how many subjects you decide to attend ?

I don't think so, if you don't have class you'll still be on campus under our supervision/talking to tutors/doing activities etc. You can always ask I guess.

Just got off the phone to them, and they said it's $170 no matter how many subjects you do.

Will send in the money order today, and for Russ' sake I wrote in the application that I heard about the Summer school via ATAR Notes  ;D

You're welcome.

Not sure what you mean, by not benefiting from school?
The $170 does not include weekends or accommodation on campus.
Website is in the original post! :)

oki, I mean like this is not a comprehensive study on each subject.
I thought it's more like an overview and summary of every subject.
Because it's quite reasonable and helpful, it's for the students who cannot get
guidance from their day school teacher due to the class size are massive.
Soli if it doesn't make sense but thnkx for letting me know there's an interesting
program going on through this summer.I will have a look at the website then make decision.
Anyway thx and when does the application close?

Yeah it's a summary of the subject and an attempt to get the important bits of each one across. It comes with notes and stuff so if you have trouble during the year you can refer to it, sure.

Applications close...soon? Whenever we're full.
